In this variants explained article, you'll find out which variant of the Hyundai Tucson you should buy based on the ex-showroom prices, variant-wise features and value for money. Here we compare and objectively analyse the 2022 Tucson’s petrol and diesel variants and the features to figure out which variant is worth buying for a good value for money and ownership experience. Then we will compare the engine specs, dimensions and mileage of the 2022 Hyundai Tucson with similarly-priced competitor SUVs like Jeep Compass, Volkswagen Tiguan and Citroen C5 Aircross.

The pros or advantages of Hyundai Tucson are:
The Hyundai Tucson has the following shortcomings or problems:
The new Hyundai Tucson is available in 2 variants with petrol-automatic and diesel-automatic powertrains. The Tucson Platinum and Signature variants with the petrol-automatic powertrain cost Rs. 27.70 lakh and Rs. 30.17 lakh, respectively.
The 2 Tucson diesel variants cost Rs. 30.20 lakh and Rs. 32.87 lakh and they’re 2.50 - 2.70 lakh pricier than the petrol variants. The top-spec Signature variant with the diesel-automatic powertrain is also available with 4-wheel-drive for an additional Rs. 1.52 lakh and costs Rs. 34.39 lakh (ex-showroom).

At first glance, the Tucson diesel seems quite expensive as it carries a healthy premium of Rs. 2.50 - 2.70 lakh over the comparable petrol-automatic variants. With such a high price gap, even the better fuel efficiency will only help you recover this higher upfront cost in about 1.20 - 1.30 lakh kilometres.
However, the significantly better performance of the Tucson diesel alone justifies almost 70% of this price gap. If you want better performance with the Tucson and are willing to pay an appropriate price, then the higher fuel efficiency pays back for the rest of the price gap in about 32,000 to 42,000km. This km-to-breakeven figure sounds a lot more reasonable
Please note that these calculations are based on the official mileage figures of the older model of the Tucson, which also uses the same petrol and diesel engines. We’ve also considered the fuel prices as of December 2022 to come to these final figures.
Depending on whether you value the better performance of the Tucson diesel over the petrol model, the fuel efficiency advantage and your usage during the ownership, you can decide if you should buy the Tucson diesel or petrol.
The base Platinum variant of the 2022 Hyundai Tucson costs Rs. 27.70 lakh with the petrol-automatic and Rs. 30.20 lakh with the diesel-automatic powertrain. The base Tucson Platinum diesel-automatic costs Rs. 2.50 lakh more than the petrol-automatic powertrain. You can refer the table below to for the safety and style related features of the Tucson Platinum variant:
Below are the entertainment and functional features of the Hyundai Tucson Platinum variant:
Even the base variant of the new 2022 Tucson offers a decent number of features. If you’re not interested in the ADAS related features, then the Platinum variant is a suitable choice for Tucson petrol as well as diesel buyers.
The Tucson top-spec Signature variant costs Rs. 30.17 lakh with the petrol-automatic and Rs. 32.87 lakh with the diesel automatic powertrain. The price difference between the Tucson Signature petrol and diesel engines is Rs. 2.70 lakh. The 2022 Tucson diesel is also available with 4WD for an additional Rs. 1.52 lakh and it costs Rs. 34.39 lakh (ex-showroom).
For the additional Rs. 2.47 - 2.67 lakh over the base variant, the Signature variant offers the following notable features:
Even the top variant of the Tucson doesn’t get some features like:
For Tucson petrol buyers, the upgrade to the Signature variant are justified because of the ADAS features. However, if you’re not interested in the ADAS features, then you can buy the lower Platinum variant.
For Tucson diesel buyers also, the upgrade to the Signature variant is almost justified if you want the ADAS features. But, with the 4WD option, the Tucson offers much better value for money. So, we will suggest considering the Tucson diesel 4WD for better value and you should buy the Platinum variant only if you’re not interested in the ADAS features.
To decide if you should buy the Tucson with the petrol or diesel engine, you can refer to the petrol-vs-diesel section, which is available towards the top of this article. Once you have figured out which engine you want, the choice is fairly simple.
If you’re not interested in the ADAS features, then you should consider the base variant. If you want the ADAS features, then you can buy the Tucson Signature petrol variant. For Tucson diesel buyers, the Signature 4WD offers better value. So, we’ll suggest Signature diesel-2WD buyers to consider upgrading to 4-wheel drivetrain.
The Tucson is available with a 2.0L normal petrol engine. Compared to the rivals like Compass petrol and Tiguan petrol, this one makes less torque as it doesn't get a turbocharger. It gets a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission and has the lowest mileage figure compared to the Tiguan and Compass.
Just like its rivals, the Tucson also gets a 2.0L turbo diesel engine. It makes 186PS of power and 416Nm of torque, both of which are better than its rivals — Jeep Compass and Citroen C5 Aircross. However, its fuel efficiency figures are a little lower than those of the Jeep Compass diesel.
