The much talked about and speculated Jeep Grand Commander three-row SUV has been officially unveiled at the 2018 Beijing Auto Show. Jeep has revealed the details of the brand new Grand Commander for the Chinese car market
The new Jeep Grand Commander had been spied several times revealing its design both on the outside as well as on the inside. However, the American SUV major has revealed a whole lot of more detailed at the official unveiling of the Grand Commander full-sized SUV in China.
The all-new Jeep Grand Commander is a very important product, as it is the first three-row SUV from the house of Jeep after a long time. The long gone Jeep Commander from the previous decade was Jeep’s last 7-seater SUV which left a big gap in the iconic SUV brand’s product lineup
Jeep has confirmed that the new Grand Commander SUV will be getting powered by the 2.0 litre turbocharged four cylinder engine that has the capability of churning out a max power output of 172 kW along with the top torque of 350 Nm. This means, the Grand Commander is tad less powerful as compared against the new Cherokee’s power figures of 201 kW and 400 Nm, which is a bit disappointing considering that the Grand Commander is a 7-seater SUV model. The SUV comes with a choice of front wheel drive or all four wheels drive system, while transmission duty is handled by a sophisticated 9 speed ZF automatic transmission gearbox. The SUV might not be a great powerful one, but offers respectable performance with its capability to run from 0-60mph in around 8 seconds.
Interestingly, despite being a 7-seater full sized SUV model, the new Jeep Grand Commander is not much larger than that of the Jeep Grand Cherokee as far as dimensions are concerned. As per the reports, the China spec Grand Commander is only 51 mm longer than the global Grand Cherokee. Surprisingly, the Grand Commander is also about 50 mm narrower as compared to the Grand Cherokee and comes with a wheelbase that is 100 mm shorter.
The Grand Commander comes packed with all the nice features such as premium Nappa leather seat upholstery, wooden trims, infotainment system with Chrysler’s uConnect and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support. There are features like three zone independent air conditioning system and the SUV offers abundant of headroom to accommodate all the occupants comfortably.
As was already known, the Grand Commander is a large SUV with a traditional boxy design language that is a good thing for full-sized SUV. The exterior design language is grand as well as luxurious, which is very befitting of 7-seater Jeep SUV model, and the traditional grand looks should work in favour of the new SUV.
The new Jeep Grand Commander is a China specific SUV and is unlikely to be offered in other markets as it is. The Jeep lovers who want a 7-seater model would have to wait for some time, as the three-row Wagoneer is slated to hit the production next year.
