Mahindra & Mahindra has finally revealed the official name for the S201 SUV as the XUV300. Based on the Ssangyong Tivoli, the baby XUV500 will debut in the Indian market by February 2019. Apart from announcing the official name and revealing the compact sub 4 meter SUV, Mahindra has announced quite a few segment- first features of the XUV 300 as well.
Speaking at the name reveal, Dr. Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, M&M Ltd. said “The XUV300 is our latest offering in the next generation of aspirational Mahindra vehicles, after the Marazzo and the Alturas G4. Our new breed of vehicles is products of engineering excellence, offer high refinement and are built on global platforms. XUV500 enjoys huge equity in consumers’ minds and now with the XUV300, the XUV brand will evolve into a family of vehicles that stands for sophistication with performance.”
Also commenting on the revelation, Rajan Wadhera, President Automotive Sector, M&M Ltd. said “The XUV300 is an all-new product that is built on a global platform and comes with many segment firsts. The XUV300’s head-turning, cheetah-inspired design, ‘fun-to-drive’ performance, first-in-class hi-tech features, best-in-class safety and class-defining interiors, make it an exciting & comprehensive package that will find a strong connect and appeal among consumers. We will offer the XUV300 in both petrol and diesel options.”
Mahindra has been bragging about the Cheetah inspired design for the XUV500 since its debut. Now, the younger sibling, the XUV300 also follows the same Cheetah design language with a hint of Tivoli’s European style. In terms of looks, the 2019 XUV300 looks like the smaller version of the XUV500 by the manufacturer. It gets a chrome finished grille at the front with projector headlamps and LED DRLs at the front and blacked out A, B, and C- Pillars giving a floating effect to the roof at the sides. At the rear, the SUV will offer the split tail lamp with a black bumper and black cladding on the wheel arches matching to the rear bumper.
At the inside, the centre console gets an integrated touchscreen infotainment system, while the dual- tone cabin gets high- gloss black and aluminium silver elements all around. Mahindra claims that the upright stance of the XUV300 gives a commanding seating position to the XUV300. The layout is quite similar to the SsangYong Tivoli available in the international markets. The features list include a sunroof, 17- inch diamond cut alloy wheels and cruise control, leather seats, dual- tone dashboard, touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There is a second screen that shows the AC temperature. As mentioned above, the manufacturer is also offering some segment- first features such as the dual-zone climate control system, disc brakes on all four wheels, the longest wheelbase in the segment and highest torque output.
However, the manufacturer hasn’t revealed anything about the powertrain specifications yet but has hinted that it will get an engine with higher torque output in the segment. It is speculated that the XUV300 will get the same 1.5-litre diesel engine that powers the Marazzo. It produces 121 bhp and 300 Nm and comes mated to a 6- speed MT. The XUV300 might also get an AMT. Petrol variant might possibly have a 1.2 litre turbocharged engine that will make 120 bhp. Mahindra has confirmed that both petrol and diesel manual options will be offered at the time of launch, while the AMT options will be launched later.
Mahindra XUV300 is expected to be launched in the price range of Rs 7-11 lakh, though not confirmed. It will enter production at Mahindra plant in Nashik soon. When launched, the new Mahindra XUV300 will take against the likes of the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and Tata Nexon in the segment.
