Volkswagen Golf GTI Vs Skoda Octavia vRs: Performance, Size, Price & Features Compared

Let’s compare the compact hot hatch - the Golf GTI - and the practical performance sedan - Octavia vRS - to see what each brings to the table.

VW Golf GTI Vs Skoda Octavia vRS – Design And Dimensions Comparison

The biggest difference between the Golf GTI and the Octavia vRS is their basic body style and overall size.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI is a classic hot hatchback. It has a compact, sporty and sleek design with sharp LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and signature red stripe across the front grille. It features sporty bumpers and comes with eye-catching 18-inch dual tone alloy wheels and a dual-tip exhaust. Being a hatchback, it’s designed to be nimble and agile, especially in city traffic.

Skoda Octavia vRS, on the other hand, is a performance sedan. Technically, it is a liftback because its entire rear hatch opens, like a hatchback, but it has a longer sedan-like body. It combines the elegance of a sedan with aggressive, sporty details. Its design includes a large, blacked-out ‘butterfly’ grille and more muscular front styling, along with vRS badging. Like the Golf GTI, the Octavia vRS offers 18-inch alloy wheels. It also features plenty of black design elements at the rear for a sporty look.

In terms of dimensions, the Golf GTI is a shorter car, measuring around 4.3 meters in length (similar in length to an SUV like the Hyundai Creta). Its smaller size makes it feel very direct and quick to respond to steering inputs.

In comparison, The Octavia vRS is a much larger car than the Golf GTI, measuring around 4.7 meters in length. This longer body gives it a stronger presence on the road and leads to more space inside.

VW Golf GTI Vs Skoda Octavia vRS – Interior and Feature Differences

Both cars offer a cabin designed for a sporty feel, but they differ in space and overall approach. The interior of the Golf GTI retains the design of the standard Golf but adds many sporty touches, such as GTI-specific digital driver’s display red highlights throughout the cabin. It comes with sporty seats that offer good support and a 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The overall feel is quite minimalist and focused on the driver. While comfortable for a hatchback, its rear seat and boot space are not as generous as sedans of similar size.

In comparison, the Octavia vRS offers a more spacious cabin. While still sporty, with a dark black and red theme and supportive sport seats, it provides better practicality. It also features a 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a digital driver’s display. The Octavia vRS’s longer body directly translates to significantly more rear-seat legroom and a much larger boot. This makes it a more suitable choice if you regularly carry passengers or need ample luggage space.

Both models are packed with modern technology and comforts. They both offer:

  • 10.25-inch digital driver’s display
  • 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Multi-zone climate control
  • Head-up display (HUD)
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Multi-color ambient lighting
  • Wireless phone charger

Like the Golf GTI, the Skoda Octavia vRS is expected to offer ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems) features, 7 airbags, electronic stability control (ESP), a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and an electronic parking brake.

VW Golf GTI Vs Skoda Octavia vRS – Powertrain Comparison

Both the Golf GTI and Octavia vRS use the same 2L turbo petrol engine from the Volkswagen Group, paired with a quick 7-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT) gearbox.

As you can see, both cars produce the same power and torque. However, the Golf GTI is quicker from 0 to 100kmph. This is because the Golf GTI is a lighter car, allowing it to accelerate faster despite less power. Both cars have their top speed electronically limited to 250 kmph.

VW Golf GTI Vs Skoda Octavia vRS – Expected Price Difference

The fully imported Golf GTI was launched in May 2025 at a price of Rs. 53 lakh (ex-showroom). The first batch of the hatchbacks are sold out. However, if you are on the lookout for a performance car, Skoda have confirmed the Octavia vRS will launch later this year. While the exact launch timeline is not known at the moment, we expect it to cost slightly less than the Golf GTI, at around 45 - 48 lakh (ex-showroom).
