A long wheelbase makes the car more stable at high speeds and gives better legroom in the back seat, while a shorter wheelbase makes the car...

The Maruti Suzuki Dzire is a compact sedan for buyers who want comfort, high mileage, easy drivability and low ownership costs. It shares its new 1.2L, 3-cylinder Z12E normal petrol engine with the Swift, producing 82PS and 111.7Nm. This engine is available with manual and AMT transmission options, while the CNG version is available with a manual transmission. Unlike older generations, the new Dzire no longer looks like a Swift with a boot. It gets its own identity, a more upmarket design and a strong standard safety kit, including 6 airbags, ESC and hill start assist. Its biggest strength remains mileage, with claimed figures of 24.79kmpl for the petrol-manual, 25.71kmpl for the petrol-AMT and 33.73kmpkg for the CNG-manual.
The new Dzire looks more mature and upmarket than before. It uses more straight lines than the Swift, which helps it establish a separate identity. Maruti say the design takes inspiration from the Ciaz and XL6, and that shows in the cleaner, wider-looking front-end.
The trapezoidal grille, gloss black trim, chrome strip and blacked-out LED headlamps create a continuous visual link across the front. The LED DRLs, large Suzuki logo and boomerang-style fog lamp housings add more detail, though the round fog lamps slightly clash with the straight-line theme.
The side profile looks a bit bulky, and the 15-inch machine-finish alloy wheels look flat. However, the chrome windowline, shark fin antenna and single-pane sunroof add a premium touch.
At the rear, the straight-line theme continues with connected-looking tail-lamps, arrow-like LED brake lamps and a subtle boot-lip spoiler. The 382L boot is practical, though the boot floor cover feels flimsy.
The Dzire’s dashboard layout is similar to the Swift, but the beige contrast trim, faux ash-wood panels and dual-tone theme make it feel more premium. The dashboard plastics are still hard and scratchy in places, but the overall cabin ambience suits a family sedan.
The cabin is practical too. It gets a large glovebox, cup holders, a wireless charger slot, large door bins, USB-A port and 12V socket. Higher variants offer a 9-inch touchscreen with wireless phone mirroring, steering-mounted controls, cruise control, auto AC with physical buttons, push-button start-stop and a 360-degree camera.
The Dzire misses a front centre armrest and telescopic steering adjustment, which would have helped its premium positioning. The touchscreen surround also feels too large and makes the 9-inch screen look smaller.
Rear seat space is good for 2 adults. The flat seat base makes the middle position usable, but the protruding centre backrest and lack of a rear centre headrest reduce comfort for the third passenger. Rear AC vents, 2 USB ports, adjustable headrests and a centre armrest improve rear-seat comfort.
The Dzire’s 1.2L normal petrol engine focuses more on mileage than performance. Still, it feels peppy enough for city driving and easy daily use. The manual is easy to drive, thanks to a light clutch and precise gearshift throws.
The AMT is convenient and shifts quickly for this type of transmission. However, head nod is noticeable if you floor the accelerator. It also does not feel as smooth with this 3-cylinder engine as it did with the older 4-cylinder K12 engine.
The CNG-manual is the most sensible option for buyers with high monthly running. Its 33.73kmpkg claimed mileage gives the Dzire a strong running cost advantage, though the lack of a CNG-AMT is a big miss for city buyers.
Ride quality is comfortable, and the soft suspension setup suits the Dzire’s family-car character. However, above 100kmph, wind and passing vehicles can unsettle the car slightly. The Dzire feels smoothest around 80kmph, with the engine running close to 2000rpm.
In V3Cars’ tests, the Dzire AMT delivered 16.08kmpl in the city and 20.78kmpl on the highway. The manual delivered 13.34kmpl in the city and 21.78kmpl on the highway. Among cars V3Cars tested in 2025, the Dzire AMT delivered the best city and highway efficiency.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire remains one of the most sensible compact sedans for family buyers. It offers high mileage, a spacious cabin, practical boot space, good safety features and Maruti Suzuki’s wide service network.
It is not perfect. The AMT can feel jerky, the doors feel light, the cabin still has hard plastics, and the lack of a CNG-AMT is a big miss. The rear seat is also better for 2 adults than 3.
Still, the Dzire gets the basics right. For buyers who want an efficient, comfortable and easy-to-own family car, the Dzire makes a lot of sense. For high-running buyers, the CNG-manual strengthens its value further. For most buyers, the VXI variant remains our top recommendation.
