In this April 2023 cars sales analysis article, we’ll look at the YoY and MoM change in sales figures for each carmaker, segment and body style in India. Where applicable, we’ll also include our observations based on the sales data and possible reasons behind a massive increase or drop in sales.

April 2023 Full Sales Analysis

Brand-Wise April 2023 Car Sales - YoY Change

  • In terms of percentage, Citroen posted the best YoY improvement of 1867% because of the low numbers in April 2022. It is worth noting that Citroen is not yet a high volume manufacturer in India.
  • Among the high volume carmakers, MG posted the best growth in April YoY comparison, with a 126% rise in sales.
  • MG was followed by Mahindra which posted a 56% YoY growth.
  • The biggest loser was Renault with a 43% decline in YoY dispatch numbers in April.
  • Renault was followed by Jeep and then Honda with a 37% and 32.52% decline, respectively,  in YoY numbers.

Brand-Wise April 2023 Car Sales - MoM Change

  • Most car brands operating in the Indian market reported an MoM decline in the month of April compared to that of March. Out of 14 mass-market brands listed here, only 3 brands reported some MoM growth in April.
  • Kia was the top gaining brand in MoM comparison, with a 7.98% growth in numbers. The other gainers in April MoM comparison were Tata with 6.73% MoM growth and Maruti Suzuki with 3.45% MoM growth in April.
  • Speaking of the losers, Citroen was the top losing brand with over 50% decline in MoM dispatches in April compared to March. It is to be noted Citroen was the consistent top gainer in the MoM comparison till March.
  • Citroen was followed by MG with a 29% drop in dispatches in April over March. The other notable losers in the MoM comparison were:
    • Toyota with 23.79% drop
    • Volkswagen with 22.26% drop
    • Honda with 20% drop
    • Nissan and Renault with 20% drop
    • Jeep with 7.98% drop

Segment-Wise April 2023 Car Sales - YoY Change

  • In terms of YoY change, the D1-segment was the biggest gainer, posting a YoY growth of 45%
  • The D1-segment was followed by the B1-segment, with a YoY growth of 27.70% in April 2023
  • The B2 and D2-segment witnessed a YoY growth of 20% in our April 2023 comparison analysis
  • A and C1-segments reported a decline in YoY comparison in April. A-segment reported a drop of 22% in April whereas C1-segment reported a decline of 3.66% on the YoY comparison

Segment-Wise April 2023 Car Sales - MoM Change

  • Out of 7, C1, D1 and D2-segments reported a decline in MoM comparison analysis.
  • C1-segment reported a 14.72% MoM decline in April, whereas D1-segment witnessed 13.30% MoM drop. The D2-segment saw a drop of 16.14% decline in the April MoM comparison analysis.
  • A-segment reported an MoM increase of 3.66%.
  • The B1-segment cars reported a 7.34% growth and was the top gaining segment in the April MoM comparison analysis. The B2-segment reported a MoM growth of 0.84%.
  • The C2-segment reported a decline of 0.61% in the April MoM comparison analysis.

Body-Wise April 2023 Car Sales - YoY Change

  • SUVs witnessed the biggest YoY growth of 30% in April 2023 compared to April 2022
  • The SUV was the best-selling bodystyle in India. It was followed by hatchbacks, which saw a 14.29% growth in sales in April 2023 compared to April 2022
  • Sedans also saw a 8.30% growth in sales in April
  • MPVs saw a 30.37% decline in sales in April YoY comparison analysis

Body-Wise April 2023 Car Sales - MoM Change

  • Hatchbacks were the top gainer by reporting a 8.31% decline in MoM comparison to March sales figures
  • Pickups were the other gainers in the comparison with a 20.63% growth in sales over March. Although, percentage-wise, pick-ups were the top-gainers, but since they make up for a very low portion of the overall monthly sales, their percentages do not give a fair picture of the market situation when compared to others.
  • Among the losers, MPVs were the top losing bodystyle with over 20% MoM decline in April, compared to March
  • Sedans reported a drop of 6.76% in MoM sales comparison, whereas SUVs reported a 1.62% decline.
