Hyundai’s sister concern Kia Motors has been eyeing the Indian auto industry for a long time, before finally making its entry in India official at the ongoing Auto Expo 2018. In 2017, Kia Motors had announced that it would enter the Indian car market with a compact sedan and a compact SUV. However, the South Korean automaker conducted the world premiere of only the Kia SP SUV concept and gave a miss to display the sedan model. This sedan from Kia was thought of be the new Rio sedan that is already selling internationally. Now, this raises the question, what will be the next model that Kia will launch in India, after the SP Concept based SUV.
As per the sources at the Auto Expo 2018, the South Korean automaker is planning to launch another SUV model in the car market of India, which will be the second offering from Kia in India. It is already known that Kia is starting operations in India next year and in mid-2019 the SP Concept based SUV will be hitting the market for sale. As per the internal sources, this second Kia SUV will be launching in India only in the second half of 2020. The South Korean car maker did not wish to disclose any details about the positioning of this SUV model in its lineup or anything regarding its under the hood mechanical bits. This is because this is also a very new product and not one from Kia’s already existing global lineup. This model is currently in very early stages of development. Sources have also revealed that this new upcoming SUV model will be specifically made for the Indian car market just like that of the SP Concept. It is also said that this new SUV model for India will also be based on a new platform. So, such a brand new vehicle will definitely get a big unveiling in India and its details will obviously be kept secret till the model’s official introduction.
As the sources said that Kia is developing an entirely new platform for this upcoming SUV, it could be indicating that this new product might be a sub-4 meter compact SUV model. As the sub-4 meter mini SUVs are in high demands in India, Kia could be contemplating on entering the highly profitable subcompact SUV market of India. If that happens, then the new Kia SUV could be fighting with the likes of that of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and Tata Nexon. Although it is currently based on speculations, if it is really a subcompact platform, then this will let Kia launch compact and premium hatchback models as well as a sub-4m sedan model. Nevertheless, it is too early to say what Kia will decide to do going forward in India. However, it is safe to say that like its parent company Hyundai which is the second largest carmaker in India, Kia is also hoping to get great success in India, since it is developing products specifically for this country.
