New Verna CVT Gets Different Tuning Than Before - Hyundai | V3Cars

When we got the chance to drive the new-generation Verna 2023, we asked Hyundai’s officials about the mileage figures of the car. We found the Verna’s mileage figures intriguing because of the fact that the same engine-transmission combination in the older Verna offered a considerably lower mileage. Meanwhile, the new one with the 1.5L normal petrol-automatic powertrain comes very close to hitting the magical 20kmpl mark. This is despite the fact that the new Verna is bigger and heavier. In response, Hyundai officials told us that they achieved a higher fuel efficiency figure with the Verna with a different tuning for the CVT automatic transmission.

Hyundai Verna

We noticed this while driving the car as it attempts to quickly jump up to a higher ratio while driving if the foot is off the accelerator. Even at city speeds, the Verna settles into a low RPM, which not only helps it achieve a high mileage figure, but also helps with improving the cabin NVH. Since the engine is revving at a lower RPM, it feels very quiet while coasting.

Moreover, this higher fuel efficiency doesn’t come at the cost of highway drivability. We have noticed this in the Maruti Suzuki cars that they are geared towards city drivability. Except for their 6-speed torque converter automatic and the Grand Vitara hybrid, the other cars don’t cruise at highway speeds at relaxed RPMs. The Verna settles into its relaxed rhythm at just 2100rpm while cruising at expressway friendly 120kmph. This is, in fact, 100rpm lower than the turbo petrol engine, which will retain its peppy feel as it cruises at the same speed with the RPM meter indicating 2200rpm.

It’s also commendable that Hyundai managed to achieve a class-leading mileage figure of 20.60kmpl with the turbo petrol-automatic powertrain. Barring the fuel-efficiency-centric City hybrid, this is the highest figure. What makes it even more worthy of an applause is the fact that the Verna turbo is the most powerful car in its segment churning out 160PS at the crank. Its torque output of 253Nm is also the best-in-class and only the City hybrid matches this figure.
