Honda City 4th-Gen Removed From Site - 3 Things To Know | V3Cars

After keeping it on sale alongside the 5th-gen City for almost 3 years, Honda have finally discontinued the older, 4th-gen City and removed it from their official website. Honda continued to sell 2 of the old City’s variants for under Rs. 10.0 lakh with the petrol-manual powertrain. This was the first time Honda continued to keep the older generation car on sale even after the launch of the new-gen model.

Here are 3 things you would love to know about the discontinued Honda City 4th gen.

1. Diesel Engine

The City went on sale early in 2014 and was one of their first cars to come with their new 1.5L turbo diesel engine. At the time, diesel engines were gaining popularity because of their lower running costs and better torque output. But the City diesel’s character was completely different from what we’ve come to expect from Honda’s engines:

  • It was not very rev-happy (even by diesel engine standards) and made its peak power at 3600rpm while other diesel engines produced their peak power at 4000rpm
  • It had fairly a low torque output of only 200Nm with a 1.5L displacement while Hyundai offered 260Nm torque from their 1.6L diesel engines
  • Finally, it was fairly loud at idle RPMs and didn’t sound refined

Honda never offered an automatic transmission with the City diesel while Hyundai had this option for their buyers all along.

2. Sunroof

At one point, the Honda City was the only car in its segment with a sunroof. The credit of democratising sunroofs, however, goes to Hyundai as they even offered this feature with the old i10 and i20. But, the City is the car, which found the balance between the right audience and an appropriate price point to offer the sunroof. The 4th-gen City made the sunroof a common and desirable feature among cars.

3. Hyundai-Honda Power Ping-Pong

The 4th-gen Honda City petrol offered 119PS of power. With the previous-generation Verna facelift, Hyundai introduced the Verna 120PS 1.0L turbo petrol as if it was only to one-up the segment leader. In response, Honda bumped up the power output of the Honda City 5th to 121PS.

With the 2023 generation update, the Verna once again takes over the crown but in terms of torque output, the Verna turbo and City hybrid share the top spot with 253Nm. I was hoping to see Hyundai squeeze out 1Nm more just to keep the game going.

This time though, the fight has moved on to features. Honda offer ADAS with adaptive cruise control in V and higher variants with manual as well as automatic transmission options. Meanwhile, Hyundai have reserved the adaptive cruise control for the Verna’s top-spec turbo petrol-automatic, but their ADAS packs a few extra features.
