Japanese automaker Maruti Suzuki is all set to launch the next-generation Swift hatchback at the 2018 Auto Expo in India. Codenamed YSD, it will be built on the same platform as the Baleno and Ignis along with some changes. The new platform codenamed as 'Heart-tec', will be much firm and lighter weighing 890kg as compared to the one used by the Baleno. According to the manufacturer, this firmness and lightweight will allow it to deliver extremely sporty dynamics that will be more in line with the first-generation Swift than the more ‘rounded’ current car.
Measuring 3,840mm in length, 1,735mm wide, 1,495mm in height, the 2018 Swift has a wheelbase of 2,450mm. This means that the new Swift is 10mm shorter in length, 40mm wider, 35mm lower and has a 20mm longer wheelbase as compared to the outgoing model. In terms of design, the 2018 Maruti Swift gets a hexagonal grille with chrome inserts, projector headlamps with LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lamps), LED tail lamps, ORVM's indicator and fog lamps as well as blackened out A, B & C pillars and rides on 15 inch or 16-inch alloy wheels. Apart from these, the upcoming Swift will offer a boot space increased by 54 litres making it 316 litres. Also, at the rear, the hatchback gets rear door handles placed on the blacked-out C-pillar. All these features make the next gen Swift look sharper, sportier and wider than the existing model.
Talking about the features on offer, the upcoming Maruti Swift will come loaded with a 7.0 touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with automatic climate control, a 4.2 inch MID (multi-information display) screen, keyless entry, leather steering wheel, tinted windows and satellite navigation. Apart from these, the automaker will also introduce the Swift with a range of customized accessory options for the exterior and interior. The safety features to be offered are dual-front airbags, ABS with EBD as standard equipment as well as reverse parking camera, cruise control and rear seat belt pre tensioner.
Under the hood, the upcoming hatchback will come powered by the same 1.2 litre K-Series petrol motor and 1.3 litre DDiS motor mated to a 5-speed manual and CVT transmission. However, it might get SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) technology in order to offer higher fuel-efficiency and take advantage of government incentives for hybrid vehicles. According to the reports, the new Swift might also get the 1.0 litre Boosterjet engine which delivers 100hp of power and 150 Nm of torque mated to a 6-speed manual transmission with a 2WD configuration.
The next gen Maruti Suzuki Swift was launched in Japan in 2016, and for the European markets, the company showcased the Swift at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show and now the car is coming to the Indian market. First introduced in 2005 in the country, the hatchback has been one of the most popular cars in its segment. The automaker had launched the next-generation Maruti Dzire in the Indian market five months ago and now Maruti Suzuki is all set to introduce the much awaited next-gen Swift in the country. Looking quite promising, let’s wait and watch how much the hatch succeeds in impressing the customer with this facelift. Stay tuned to V3cars.com for further updates on the 2018 Maruti Suzuki Swift.
