Tata Motors have joined hands with Zoomcar to offer Tata Tigor electric cars on the self- drive rental platform of Zoomcar in Pune. A ceremony was held in Pune wherein Mr Greg Moran, co- founder and CEO of Zoomcar along with Mr Shailesh Chandra, President— Electric Mobility Business & Corporate Strategy for Tata flagged-off the first batch of the Tigor EV from a showroom in Baner. The companies have plans to provide 500 vehicles across 20 Indian cities further.

Speaking on the occasion, Shailesh Chandra said, “The future of mobility will increasingly be connected, shared and powered by zero emission technologies. Tata Motors is strongly committed to this transformative journey and working with all like-minded partners to accelerate the enabling ecosystem. It is a great pleasure to announce our partnership with Zoomcar to offer shared electric mobility solution for the citizens of Pune. Tata Tigor EV will now be available on the self-drive rental platform, offered by Zoomcar, to enable zero-emission transport option for the citizens of Pune. We are confident that our customers will appreciate and enjoy the driving experience.”

Commenting on the partnership, Greg Moran said, “The Zoomcar team is thrilled to partner with Tata Motors to bring electric vehicles to Pune. This marks the beginning of a dynamic partnership within electric mobility and we expect to touch 20 cities and 500 electric vehicles with Tata over the next year.”

Based on the regular Tigor compact sedan, the Tigor EV uses an AC 3- phase electric motor, which produces 40 BHP. It has a 216 Ah, 72V battery and has a claimed top speed of 100 kmph and a range of 130 km on a single charge.

Though, Tata Motors does not have any EVs on sale for the public but have been strategizing the integration of their electrically powered Tigor incrementally, through various other channels. The first one, as part of the government tender for 10,000 Indian Made Electric Cars are still being delivered to government agencies. Word on the grapevine suggests that Tata is targeting corporate entities as part of their fleet to begin the induction of electric cars. According to the statement released by the company, Tata Motors is committed to the government's vision of driving electric mobility in the country and is working in a collaborative manner with various ecosystem partners to facilitate faster adoption of electric vehicles. In July 2018, Tata Motors supplied 10 Tigor EVs to Cognizant's Hyderbad campus. In 2017, state-run Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) had also placed an order for the electric cars.

Founded in 2013, Zoomcar allows users to rent cars by the hour, day, week or month. At present, the company is operating in nearly 35 cities across India. The company holds the distinction of being India’s first self- drive mobility platform, with the introduction of car sharing services in 2013 and the introduction of cycle sharing services in 2017. Zoomcar allows users to rent cars by the hour, day, week, or month, while Cycles can be rented in increments of 30 minutes.
