Swedish automaker Volvo has finally launched the much awaited second generation XC60 premium SUV in the country. Available only in one trim 'Inscription', the newly launched Volvo XC60 is priced at Rs 55.90 lakh (ex-showroom). The first generation of XC60 was launched in 2011 in India and has been replaced now by this next gen SUV.
Powering the Volvo XC60 is a 1,969 cc four-cylinder twin-turbocharged diesel engine that churns out a maximum of 233 bhp power and a peak torque of 480 Nm. The engine comes mated to an 8-speed Geartronic automatic transmission, sending power to all the four wheels. However, the automaker has not launched any petrol variant of the premium SUV as it does internationally. Globally, the XC60 is offered with a couple of petrol engines as well -2-litre T5 and 2-litre T6, along with an entry-level 2-litre diesel motor D4. Although, no petrol version of the 2017 Volvo XC60 is available currently in India, but according to Volvo, they will surely introduce petrol engines in the future with this premium SUV.
Based on Volvo’s latest Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform, new Volvo XC60 measures 4688 mm in length, 1902 mm in width and 1658 mm in height, and comes with a wheel base of 2865 mm. The second generation Volvo XC60 looks quite stylish as compared to its predecessor as it borrows its styling and features from its elder sibling XC90. Volvo's signature multi-slat chrome grille, flanked by a pair of stylish LED headlamps with Thor's hammer LED daytime running lamps along with front bumper that gets some subtle lines with, a wide central airdam and some stylish chrome elements on either side are the major exterior highlights.
Other than these, the SUV also gets a pair of small LED foglamps, electrically operable ORVMs with integrated turn signal lights, and a stylish set of alloy wheels while the rear gets vertically stacked LED taillamps, a roof-mounted spoiler, and a beefy rear bumper and chrome accents along the reflectors and chrome-tipped horizontal dual exhaust pipes.
Inside, the second generation Volvo XC60 offers Nappa leather upholstery, heads-up display and Bowers, Wilkins audio system and a 9.0-inch centre Sensus touchscreen system. The rear seat passengers also get their own touch-based system for AC control. The seats can be electronically folded to add more space to the already huge boot which gets an electronically controlled tailgate.
The safety features of the 2017 Volvo XC60 include run-off-road mitigation, large animal, cyclist and pedestrian detection systems, autonomous braking, and driver assist features like - 360-degree camera, semi-automatic parking, blind-spot assist and lane departure warning and radar-based safety features like adaptive cruise control. When activated, the system can support steer, accelerate, brake, all corresponding with traffic conditions, on well-marked roads at speeds of up to 130 kmph.
The SUV will be locally assembled at Volvo’s Bengaluru plant and will take against the likes of vehciles such as Audi Q5, Land Rover Discovery Sport, and the Mercedes GLC. The deliveries of the Volvo XC60 will commence soon.
