April 2023 Cars Sales Analysis - D-Segment Cars YoY, MoM Change, 6-Month Trend | V3Cars

In this April 2023 car sales analysis article, we’ll look at the YoY and MoM change in sales figures of all D-segment cars in India. Where applicable, we’ll also include our observations based on the sales data and possible reasons behind a massive increase or drop in sales. Lastly, the table with monthly sales of all D-segment cars for the last 6 months will give you an idea about the 6-month sales trend.

D-Segment Cars

D-Segment Cars April 2023 Car Sales - YoY Change

  • SUVs and MPVs continue to rule the D-segment. There are only 3 sedans and only 1 pick-up in the D-segment.
  • With the exception of the Toyota Hilux pick-up, the top 10 best-selling D-segment cars in the month of April 2023 were all SUVs or MPVs.
  • The Mahindra Scorpio (Scorpio-N and Scorpio Classic), Toyota Innova (Crysta + Hycross), Mahindra XUV700, Hector/Hector Plus and Toyota Fortuner took the top 5 spots in the sales ranking for the month of April.
  • The top gainer in the mass-market offerings in the D-segment from various manufacturers in April were the Scorpio sisters, with over a 250% growth in the YoY comparison analysis.
  • The Scorpios were followed by the Hector and Hector Plus pair, with a 114% YoY growth.
  • Hyundai Tucson sales rose over 10 times in April 2023 compared to that of April 2022 – from just 47 units in April 2022 to 550 units in April 2023.
  • MG Gloster dispatches also rose by 3.5 times in April of 2023 compared to April 2022.
  • The top notable losers in the YoY comparison were:
    • Camry with a 51% drop in dispatches.
    • Innova Crysta and Hycross with a 24% decline in sales.
    • Toyota Hilux with a 13% drop in sales.
    • And Tata Safari with a 2% drop in sales in April 2023 YoY comparison analysis.
  • The Kia Carnival reported zero sales in the month of April of 2023. In April 2022, 355 units of the Carnival luxury MPV were dispatched by Kia.
  • The Alturas G4 and Skoda Octavia are no longer on sale.

D-Segment Cars April 2023 Car Sales - MoM Change

  • In terms of MoM performance, the Scorpio sisters were the best-selling cars in the D-segment and saw a growth of 9% in April over March.
  • The Toyota Hilux was the top gainer in terms of MoM sales comparison. with a near-21% increase in dispatches compared to March. Considering the 6-month average sales of the famed pick-up from Toyota, which is just 92 units, the months of March and April have seen above average sales performance for the Hilux.
  • The Toyota Innova Crysta and Hycross saw the steepest decline in dispatches amongst the mass-market cars in the segment. Innova sales dropped from  8,075 in March to just 4,837 in April, which is a drop of 40%.
