In this August 2023 car sales analysis article, we’ll look at the YoY and MoM change for the 20 top-selling cars of August 2023. Using this data, we will also provide our observations and insights on the reasons for significant improvements or declines in sales, where relevant.
August 2023 - 20 Top-Selling Cars YoY Change
- Maruti Suzuki Swift reported the best-combined growth figure, with a gain of over 65% in terms of YoY comparison.
- The Swift was the best-selling car in India in August 2023, with almost 18,700 units sold.
- The next best YoY performer in Aug 2023 was the Tata Altroz, with a growth of over 57%.
- The top 13 best-selling cars in August 2023 sold well over 10,000 units each.
- Tata Nexon was the top loser in the YoY comparison analysis with over 57% decline in YoY numbers.
- The Alto lost sales by 33% in the YoY comparison analysis for the month of August. The Alto pair was followed by WagonR with a 15% decline in the YoY comparison analysis for the month of Aug.
- Half of the models on the top 20 best-selling list in Aug 2023 are from Maruti and the homegrown carmaker claimed the top 4 spots.

Aug 2023 - 20 Top-Selling Cars MoM Change
- The Alto pair was the top performer in terms of MoM comparison analysis for the month of August, with over 35% increase in dispatches compared to July 2023.
- The Grand Vitara was the second-best performer in the MoM comparison for the month of August, with a near 30% growth in sales.
- Almost half of the top 20 selling cars in the list saw an MoM growth in dispatch numbers.
- The Nexon was the top losing car in the MoM comparison with a decline of 35%.
- The Nexon was followed by the Ertiga, which saw a decline of 14% in the MoM comparison for Aug.
- Maruti launched the B2-segment SUV Fronx in June and 13,220 units were sold in July. But in the month of Aug its dispatches declined by 8%.
