South Korean auto major, Hyundai is going to develop a brand new small car, dubbed as a micro-SUV. Former MD & CEO of Hyundai India, Y.K Koo revealed in 2018 that a micro-SUV is being considered by the company, and now, as per a new report, the micro-SUV project is underway.
The upcoming Hyundai Car has been codenamed “Hyundai AX”, and it is going to be a global model. In the South Korean market, it will be an indirect successor to the previous generation Hyundai Atos (Santro). Hyundai’s annual production target for this micro-SUV will be 70,000 units.
Hyundai AX could be based on the new generation Santro's K1 platform. It will most likely be powered by a 1.0-litre engine. For the Indian market, Hyundai might choose the same petrol engine for this car that does the duty under the latest Santro. This is a 1.1-litre, naturally aspirated, 4-cylinder engine offering 69PS of power and 99Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and a 5-speed AMT.
Since the Indian auto expo is around the corner, we anticipate Hyundai to reveal the AX in its concept form in India. Whether it would be launched in India before Korea is something that remains to be seen.
Post its launch in the Indian auto market, the upcoming new Hyundai AX will primarily compete against the upcoming Maruti Suzuki S-Presso and Renault Kwid. Within Hyundai’s lineup, we expect the AX to be positioned under the Santro.
