Hyundai i20 Crosses 5 Lakh Unit Sales Milestone
The Elite i20 by the South Korean automaker Hyundai has crossed the sales milestone of 5 lakh units in India. The current Hyundai i20 has been on sale in India since August 2014 and took almost 4 years for the premium hatchback to achieve this milestone.
Looking at the sales figures, the Elite i20 had sold 491,428 units in May 2018 and was 8,572 units away from achieving the milestone. The hatchback sold 10,664 in May and crossed the 500,000 unit mark in June 2018 with average sales of 10,916 units every month. Talking about the previous year figures, in FY2015, the i20 registered sales of 77,947 units, with the numbers consistently growing to 1,27,962 units in FY2016, and 1,26,304 units in FY2017, as well as 1,36,182 units in FY2018.
The Hyundai Elite i20 received an update this year and was launched at the 2018 Auto Expo in the country priced at Rs 5.35 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The 2018 Elite i20 is available with two engine options - a 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 81 bhp and 115 Nm mated to a 5-speed manual and a 1.4-litre U2 CRDi Diesel mill mated to a 6-speed manual and churning out 88 bhp of maximum power and 220 Nm of peak torque. The automaker also launched the CVT version of the premium hatchback with 1.2-litre petrol engine.
In terms of features, the 2018 Elite i20 offers a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink compatibility, rear parking camera (display on infotainment screen) with sensors, automatic climate control with rear AC vents, cooled glove box, electrically foldable and adjustable ORVMs with welcome function and automatic projector headlamps with LED DRLs and positioning lamps, among others along with dual front airbags and ABS as standard across the range and top-spec Asta(O) variant gets four airbags and ISOFIX hold seat anchors in addition to the standard equipment as safety features.;
Talking about the price list, while the i20 petrol manual pricing ranges between Rs 5.41-7.97 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the petrol automatic variant available in Magna Executive and Asta grades costs Rs 7.05 lakh and Rs 8.23 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) respectively. However, the diesel range costs between Rs 6.79 lakh and Rs 9.22 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and the Hyundai i20 Active is offered with the same petrol and diesel engines with prices starting from Rs 7.06 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and top of the line trim at Rs 10.07 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). However, there is no automatic variant available with the Hyundai Elite i20.
In terms of competitors, the prime rival of the Hyundai Elite i20, the Maruti Suzuki Baleno has also achieved cumulative sales of 4,00,000 units, averaging around 12,500 units a month since its launch in October 2015 in India and is likely to achieve the milestone of selling 5 lakh units by March 2019. The list of other competitors includes the Honda Jazz, Ford Freestyle and the Volkswagen Polo.
