Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has announced that the ‘i20’ has surpassed the 1.3 Million Sales mark worldwide since its first launch in India a decade back. Out of the 1.3 million units, the manufacturer has sold 8.5 lakh units only in the Indian market. Hyundai also claims this achievement to be the fastest for any automobile in the respective segment.
Commenting on the achievement, Vikas Jain, Asst. Vice President- National Sales, Hyundai Motor India Ltd. said, “We are extremely delighted with this unprecedented milestone that i20 models have achieved of 1.3 Million global sales and have met the aspirations of Indian and Global customers. Hyundai sells the i20 as the Elite and Active i20 in the Indian market. Mechanically, the Elite i20 comes with petrol and diesel engine options with the 1.2 L Kappa series petrol engine making 81 bhp of power and 117 Nm of peak torque and has an option of either a 5- speed manual or a CVT transmission option. The diesel version comes powered with the 1.4 L U2 CRDi engine with 89 bhp of power and 224 Nm of torque. The diesel engine comes mated to a 6- speed manual transmission option only.
The existing Elite i20 was launched at Auto Expo 2018 in February 2018, gets cascading grille and bumper design at the front. At the rear, the car gets bigger tail lamps and redesigned tailgate. The new 2018 i20 also gets new alloy wheels and will be available in 6 options. In terms of safety, the 2018 Hyundai Elite i20 comes with 6 airbags, parking assist and auto door lock at high speed. It is also one of the most selling Hyundai cars in India. The Elite i20 is an avid part of Hyundai’s 10,000 club cars that sells every month.
Hyundai had launched the i20 their premium compact car model in India in 2008 and since then the car model has been the benchmark in its segment. In 2009 the Hyundai i20 received 5- Star Euro NCAP safety rating. In 2015 the i20 was JD Powers Best Premium Car in initial quality and most appealing premium compact car. Again in 2015 the Elite i20 sold 1 lakh units in 11 months flat. By 2016, 1 million i20s were sold as a brand, not forgetting the Hyundai i20 winning the ICOTY 2015 award for 2015.
Hyundai i20 which is known for its stylish looks and premium interiors has been in market for a few years as of now. It is a global model which is offered in 2- door as well as 4- door body style. Currently, in its second generation, the existing model was introduced in 2014 with the facelift Elite i20. The Hyundai i20 competes with the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Honda Jazz and Volkswagen Polo in the Premium Compact Hatchback segment.
Recently, Hyundai Motor Company announced the world’s first smart fingerprint technology that allows drivers to unlock doors as well as start the vehicle. The first vehicle to come incorporated with the technology is likely to be the upcoming 2019 Santa Fe that is expected to be launched in selected markets in the first quarter of 2019. Also, the Korean automaker has announced price hike of up to Rs 30,000 on its vehicle range in the country, effective from January 2019. The rise in input costs has led the manufacturer to go for this price hike in the country. Hyundai sells a wide range of models in the country ranging from the Santro hatchback to the Tuscon SUV which is available from a price range of Rs 3.89 lakh and Rs 26.84 lakh (all prices ex- showroom Delhi).
