South Korean carmaker unveiled a Hyundai Kona Iron Man edition at the ongoing San Diego Comicon festival in USA. The Hyundai Kona Iron Man Edition will be a limited edition car and the production will begin in December 2018. The launch is expected to take place sometime in early 2019.
Speaking about the special edition Kona, Vice President Minsoo Kim, head of Marketing Division, Hyundai Motor Company said, "Hyundai's ongoing collaboration with Marvel is a great way for us to become a part of what people are interested in and engage with a highly passionate fan base. Our relationship is more than just product placement as we aim to create custom experiences that resonate with the Marvel audience. The Kona Iron Man Edition is a perfect example of blending our two worlds together into one special vehicle that we hope will excite fans of both brands all around the globe."
The Iron Man suit was one of the key design inspirations for the Kona. The 2019 Hyundai Kona Iron Man edition gets a unique light signature up front including customized LED daytime running lamps resembling the facemask and the eye shape of the Iron Man suit. Other Iron man cues include an Iron Man mask motif on the roof, a V-shaped hood garnish, Iron Man badging on the bonnet, a 'Stark Industries" decal on the side, custom 18-inch alloy wheels with Iron Man mask centre cap, engraving on the D-pillar among others. Also, the exterior color tone includes two-tone color from Iron Man red and matt grey.
At the inside, the special edition SUV gets Iron Man signature in the form an Iron Man gearknob, a special heads up display, a centre console having Iron Man graphics and custom seat designs. However, Hyundai has not announced pricing for the special edition Kona. Since it will be available in limited numbers, the automaker will distribute the special edition Kona worldwide but the numbers are still unknown. Also, the powertrain options have not been revealed by the manufacturer yet. However, instead of the entry-level Kona's a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 147 hp, we can expect it to come powered by the turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder making 175 hp with either front- or all-wheel-drive versions.
This is not the first time Hyundai has collaborated with a fictional character to design a vehicle, Hyundai's collaboration on developing a frankly garish Veloster for Ant-Man and The Wasp is old and the company is teaming up with Marvel once again for the limited edition Kona SUV. Also, Hyundai is not the only automaker that has introduced a vehicle based on a comic character. Two years ago, Nissan presented a Star Wars edition of its Rogue SUV at the Los Angeles auto show. The SUV was a success far beyond expectations and the Japanese manufacturer has continued its association with the movie franchise.
We hope that the Iron Man based special edition Kona brings the same success for the manufacturer as the Rogue did for Nissan. Also, Jeep previously had a special edition Renegade for the Batman vs. Superman movie and while it wasn't the Iron Man superhero, Isuzu had a special edition Vehicross for the Iron Man Triathlon event.
