In this January 2023 cars sales analysis article, we’ll look at the YoY and MoM change in sales figures for each carmaker, segment and body style in India. Where applicable, we’ll also include our observations based on the sales data and possible reasons behind a massive increase or drop in sales.

Brand-Wise January 2023 Car Sales - YoY Change
- In terms of percentage, Citroen posted the best YoY improvement of over 1,900% because of the low numbers in January 2022. It is worth noting that Citroen is not yet a mass volume manufacturer in India.
- Among the mass volume carmakers, Toyota posted the best growth in January YoY comparison, with a near-74% rise in sales.
- Mahindra posted the second best YoY growth of around 66%.
- The biggest losers were Renault and Nissan with 63% and 29.5% decline, respectively, in YoY dispatch numbers in January.
- Honda sales dropped by about 25% in January 2023 compared to January 2022.

Brand-Wise January 2023 Car Sales - MoM Change
- In terms of MoM change, most brands saw an increase in dispatches in January over December.
- The 5 brands that saw a decline in dispatch numbers as the previous month are — Citroen, Jeep, Renault, Skoda and Volkswagen.
- Speaking of losers, the top losing brand in terms of MoM comparison for the month of January was Renault with a 51% decline in dispatches, followed by Volkswagen with 38% MoM decline.
- Kia was the top gaining brand with 88% growth in MoM dispatches in January compared to December.
- Kia was followed by Nissan with a 39% growth in dispatches in January over December.

Segment-Wise January 2023 Car Sales - YoY Change
- In terms of YoY change, the D2-segment was the biggest gainer, posting a YoY growth of 237%
- The D2-segment was followed by the D1-segment, with a YoY growth of 55% in January 2023
- The B2 and C-segments witnessed a YoY growth of 16% in January 2023 comparison analysis
- In terms of YoY comparison, all segments witnessed growth except the A-segment, which witnessed a decline of 1.64% in the January YoY comparison analysis

Segment-Wise January 2023 Car Sales - MoM Change
- In terms of MoM comparison for the month of January, all segments saw a growth in their sales figures in comparison to the decline in sales witnessed in the December MoM sales analysis
- The D2-segment and A-segment saw the highest MoM growth of all, of around 130% and 75%, respectively
- The B1 segment followed the A-segment with a 38% growth while the D1-segment saw a growth of 34%

Body-Wise January 2023 Car Sales - YoY Change
- SUVs witnessed the biggest YoY growth of roughly 25% in January 2023 compared to January 2022
- The SUV was the best-selling bodystyle in India. It was closely followed by hatchbacks, which saw a 17.26% gain in sales in January 2023 compared to January 2022
- MPVs suffered a 15% decline in sales in January YoY comparison analysis
- Sedans also saw a 8% decline in sales in January

Body-Wise January 2023 Car Sales - MoM Change
- Pickups were the biggest losers with 80% decrease in sales
- Pickups were followed by sedans with 0.14% drop in dispatches in January compared to December
- Pickups are not a popular body-style among Indian buyers and it is evident from the numbers
- Among the winners, hatchbacks were the top gaining bodystyle with over 1,23,000 units sold in January, compared to almost 85,000, witnessing a rise of over 45% in monthly sales
- SUVs saw a growth of 24% in MoM comparison, whereas MPVs saw a growth of nearly 14% in January over December
