Iconic American Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) manufacturer, Jeep made a real impact on the Indian automotive industry with the launch of its Compass. The Jeep Compass is the first Jeep product to be manufactured locally in India, and this enabled the company to aggressively price the product starting at Rs. 14.95 lakhs at the time of its launch. The new India-made Jeep Compass launched in the domestic car market on 31st of July this year, and even before its launch it has been generating a lot of interest among Indian SUV aficionados. After more than 5 months of its launch in India, the Compass continues to garner great sales figures and its demands have been spiraling, which ensure that it continues to lead its own segment.
As per the sales details of the Jeep Compass as well as its market competitors in the November, 2017, the Compass is still ruling its own segment in India in terms of monthly sales. The Jeep Compass’ price range makes it compete against many SUV models in India from several segments. However, the Compass’ primary rivals in the country are the Hyundai Tucson, Mahindra XUV500 and the Tata Hexa.
The Jeep India dispatched 2,828 units of the Compass while Mahindra & Mahindra managed 1,229 units of the XUV500, reports Cartoq. Tata Motors rolled out 764 units of the Hexa while Hyundai did only 261 units of the Tucson, the reports adds.
In the initial two months after launch, Jeep India managed to sell a great 5,106 units of the Compass in the country. Although the current total sales number of the Jeep compact SUV is not available at the moment, it is evident that the Compass is selling much more than its direct competitors in India. The sales numbers of the Compass is particularly high considering the fact that vehicles in its segment don’t sell in such good numbers, as they are pretty expensive.
Jeep’s parent company, FCA has established its presence in the Indian UV market with the high success of the Jeep Compass. Owing to the increased GST cess, the Jeep Compass now ranges from Rs. 15.16 lakhs to Rs. 21.37 lakhs. Nevertheless, even after the price hike due to added taxes, the Jeep Compass’ demands have not declined at all.
Jeep Compass’ petrol avatar gets equipped by a 1.4L MultiAir turbocharged petrol engine which generates 160 bhp of power and 250 Nm of torque, and is paired to a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission options. The diesel version packs in a 2.0L MultiJet oil burner offering 170.6 bhp and 350 Nm and is coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission.
Fiat (FCA) is currently primarily focusing on boosting the Jeep brand’s sales in India and is expected to be busy working on another Jeep SUV for the Indian market. This upcoming model is expected to be the entry-level compact SUV – the Jeep Renegade or a smaller sub-4 meter SUV based on the Renegade specifically for India.
