In a strange move, Jeep India have discontinued the Compass turbo petrol variants. The Jeep Compass is now only available with a 2.0L turbo diesel engine. Read on to understand the reason behind Jeep’s strange move.

In December 2022, Jeep India discontinued the petrol manual variants of the Compass. Now, Jeep have pulled the plug on the petrol automatic variants of the Compass as well. Jeep India offered the Compass with a 1.4L turbo-petrol engine that put out 160PS of power and 250Nm of torque with the option of either a 6-speed manual gearbox or a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. The 1.4L turbo petrol engine was subsequently pulled off the shelves in European markets in a phased manner. However, Jeep continued to offer this engine with the Compass in India.
Now, Jeep have decided not to update this engine for the latest BS6 phase 2 and road driving emission norms. In Europe, Jeep now offer the Compass petrol with a more powerful but smaller 1.3L turbo petrol engine. However, this engine is unlikely to come to India anytime soon.

Since Jeep have already replaced the 1.4L turbo petrol engine with a new 1.3L turbo petrol engine in the global markets, it doesn’t make sense for Jeep India to update the older engine for the new emission norms, especially considering the low volume sales figures of the Jeep Compass. Jeep India are yet to greenlight the new engine for the Indian market and even if they do, it is still some time away from an Indian market introduction.
This leaves the Compass with a sole turbo diesel engine, which also powers Jeep’s 3-row SUV — the Meridian. Jeep’s latest decision goes against the flow of the market, which is heavily focusing on petrol and strong hybrids while phasing out diesel powertrains. It’s ironic to note that the bigger Jeep SUVs like the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee, which are meant to come with a diesel engine, actually come with a 2.0L turbo petrol engine whereas the smaller and lighter Compass no longer offers the option of a petrol engine.
