The Mahindra G4 Rexton has made its official debut at the Auto Expo 2018 and will soon become the most expensive SUV from the homegrown automaker, making XUV500 lose its flagship position in the Mahindra line up. It is technically the second-gen SsangYong Rexton, but will be marketed under Mahindra’s label in its second innings in the country. Though it is the second-gen SsangYong Rexton technically, but will be rebranded as a Mahindra this time around.
In comparison to the outgoing Rexton, the new SUV is spruced up on a brand new platform. However, it is in the same league of being a body-on-frame offering like most of the other SUVs in the segment. Thanks to the new designing and underpinnings, the G4 Rexton has grown dimensionally compared to the SsangYong Rexton. The length, width and height of the new SUV is 4,850mm (+95mm over the existing Rexton), 1,960mm (+60mm), 1,825mm (+40mm) respectively along with a wheelbase of 2,865mm (+30mm). Mahindra is also promising a stiffer and lighter chassis compared to the already existing model with high-strength steel (HSS) construction.
Powered by the 2.2-litre diesel (e-XDi 220) engine, the G4 Rexton produces the power of 181PS and gets a 7-speed AT transmission, projector headlights, 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 360-degree camera, , Nappa leather upholstery, cooled seats and, powered tailgate with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The Mahindra G4 Rexton will primarily go up against the likes of Ford Endeavour and the Toyota Fortuner and is likely to give a run for money to the two when it will be launched later this year. It is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 24 lakh ex-showroom just like the Isuzu MU-X, which starts at Rs 24.83 lakh. The Endeavour and the Fortuner, begins from Rs 25.64 lakh and Rs 27.80 lakh (diesel) (all prices, ex-showroom New Delhi).
