To gain the maximum advantage from the festive season in the country, Maruti Suzuki has launched the Alto Utsav Edition in India. The limited edition hatchback is priced at Rs 3.54 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Utsav Edition is based on the VXi variant of the car and offers no mechanical changes. However, it does offer some interesting cosmic changes to keep the customers interested in buying the car.

Talking about the updated and additional features, the red and yellow swoopy decals on the sides is the first thing you’ll notice at the exterior of the limited edition hatch. Apart from this, chrome garnishing on the outside rearview mirrors (ORVMs), fog-lamp housings, and inverted-L creases above the fog lamps, lower lip of the boot lid and the tail lamps are the other highlights on the outside. However, at the interior, the manufacturer has only updated the seat covers while in terms of safety features, reverse parking sensor system has been added.

Under the hood, the Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 Utsav Edition is powered by a 796 cc three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 47 HP of power and 60 Nm of peak torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission. The same engine empowers the regular model of Alto 800 as well.

The point to be considered here is that the Alto 800 VXi(O) variant retails at Rs 3.74 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and the addition of the ‘Utsav Edition’ accessory kit makes the amount Rs 3.94 lakh. However, Maruti Suzuki dealers are offering discounts of up to Rs 25,000 with additional exchange bonus on offer. Hence, this limited edition offering is going to be a good deal for the customers looking to buy the hatchback.

Although, Maruti Suzuki has offered the Utsav Edition Alto 800 for the customers this festive season, the major missing   is the facelift version of the Alto 800 by the manufacturer. It’s been a very long time since the automaker has introduced any updated version of the car. One more reason why the facelift version of Alto 800 is a must, is because the new launches in the segment such as Renault Kwid and Datsun Redi-Go has been giving a tough fight to the Alto 800, resulting in the decline in sales for the hatch.

Although, Alto 800 is still the leader in number of units sold in the FYI 2016-17 in its segment, sales have declined by 7.4 per cent to 1,62,894 units even after taking the hit in sales in the first eight months while the Renault Kwid has shot up to 73,676 units from 11,044 units sold in the same period the year before. Having already sold 1,30,000 units since its launch in 2015, Renault Kwid has been successful in creating a benchmark for the segment. The Kwid has been growing good and has already garnered 20 per cent market share in this segment limiting the share of Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 in the entry-level car segment to 42 per cent between April and November 2016 compared to 50.9 per cent in the same period a year earlier.

However, according to the reports in the market, Maruti Suzuki is working on a concept car expected to debut at the 2018 Auto Expo that will give a new direction to the Alto 800 family. Although, nothing has been officially confirmed yet, but if that happens it will be interesting to see what changes does the concept offers in order to enhance and update the existing Alto 800 model. Also, will it be able to regain the same position of the hatchback in the market as possessed by the car earlier rising above the competitors. Stay tuned to V3cars.com for further updates.
