Renault’s Lodgy MPV model might not be a success in the Indian car market, but that hasn’t stopped the French carmaker to be preparing a new MPV model for this country. The Indian MPV segment has really taken a hit due to the massive craze of the SUVs, which were always popular in the country. Now, the modern, stylish and urban SUVs have taken the popularity of the SUV segment to an all-time high. As a result, the good old MPVs have been pushed to the corner. In fact, not only the Lodgy, none of the MPV models in India are selling well, excepting the massively popular Toyota Innova Crysta and Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. Nevertheless, Renault is readying up a new affordable MPV model which is codenamed as the RBC, and it was spotted testing a few months back. Now, the Renault RBC has been spied again, this time close to Chennai.
The Renault RBC test prototype model was fully covered in thick veils offering no glimpse at the exterior design of the vehicle. However, the MPV seems to be in a close to production state, and this means that e can expect the RBC to hit the showrooms sometime by mid-2019. As the RBC will be manufactured at the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s manufacturing plant in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu, its sighting near Chennai is obvious. The Renault RBC will be a 7-seater MPV, but will be positioned lower than the affordable Maruti Ertiga, which will make the RBC a rival of its Japanese cousin, the Datsun GO Plus. Thus, the upcoming new Renault MPV is expected to come at a highly aggressive price range of around Rs. 4.5 – Rs. 7 lakhs in India.
The test prototype’s side profile shows thick and tall pillars, which could offer a roomy interior. The MPV’s beltline rises from the front and runs till the rear of the vehicle offering a prominent look. However, the back-end seems to be pretty narrow and its boxy design comes with wraparound tail lights. Thus, it seems that rear row of seats of the RBC might be rather cramped up.
The spy shots also offer an idea that the new upcoming Renault 7-seater MPV might come with a good ground clearance of above 170 mm. However, being a sub-4 meter compact MPV, accommodating 7 occupants seems to be tough. It might offer good comfort at the front two rows, but the third row space seems to be highly limited. Nevertheless, Renault is trying its luck in this segment, as the Indian audience still likes accommodating people movers at attractive pricing.
The new upcoming Renault RBC MPV is likely to flaunt a modern and sharp design language being a new Renault vehicle. It is expected to get the Renault family’s new sleek nose, stylized front grille, clamshell bonnet, bold bumper and high raked windshield to offer a modern and attractive visual appeal. The new MPV should also offer big alloy wheels on top variants to add to its good looks.
The upcoming Renault RBC also seems to be having a very well-proportionate exterior design and is speculated to be based on the low cost CMF-A+ platform. Under the hood, it is expected to get an upgraded version of the Kwid’s 1.0 litre petrol mill paired with a 5 speed manual and an AMT transmission option.
