Volkswagen Tera SUV India Launch: Everything We Know So Far | V3Cars

The Volkswagen Tera SUV has been on sale in Brazil since 2025 as the brand’s entry-level compact crossover based on the MQB-A0 platform. While the SUV was initially seen as a South America-focused product, its dimensions and platform compatibility are now making it look increasingly relevant for India’s sub-4m SUV segment.

Volkswagen Tera India Launch, Features, Engine & Expected Price

What makes the Tera especially interesting is its overall footprint. The SUV measures 4,151mm in length and has a 2,566mm wheelbase — dimensions that strongly suggest Volkswagen could adapt it for India with relatively limited changes. In fact, based on our analysis, Volkswagen may only need to redesign the bumpers and cladding to bring the Tera under the 4m mark.

When launched in India, the Volkswagen Tera will slot below the Volkswagen Taigun as Volkswagen’s rival to SUVs like the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV 3XO. The Tera will also be Volkswagen’s sister model to the Skoda Kylaq, much like the relationship between the Taigun and Skoda Kushaq.

Volkswagen Tera In Brazil

Volkswagen revealed the Tera globally in early 2025, and the SUV went on sale in Brazil in May 2025. In Brazil, it is positioned as Volkswagen’s entry-level crossover below the T-Cross and Nivus. Here’s a look at the engines and transmissions the Tera is offered in:

The Brazil-spec Volkswagen Tera is available in multiple variants, including MPI, TSI, Comfort and High trims. Depending on the variant, the SUV gets normal petrol and turbo petrol engine options along with manual and automatic transmissions.

Tera Dimensions Strongly Support An India Launch

One of the biggest reasons the Tera has started attracting attention in India is its dimensions. The following table compares the Brazil-spec Volkswagen Tera with the Skoda Kylaq and Hyundai Venue. The Kylaq gives us the clearest platform reference, while the Venue is one of the Tera’s key expected rivals in India:

The Tera’s 2566mm wheelbase is the most important figure here, as it is identical to the Skoda Kylaq’s wheelbase. This suggests Volkswagen may not need to alter the SUV’s core structure or cabin area to create an India-spec version.

The challenge is the overall length. The Brazil-spec Tera measures 4151mm in its longest form, making it 151mm longer than the sub-4m limit. Based on its design, Volkswagen could potentially achieve this reduction with shorter bumpers and revised cladding instead of changing the wheelbase or metal body panels. Mahindra used a somewhat similar strategy when adapting the SsangYong Tivoli into the Mahindra XUV300 (now the XUV3XO).

Volkswagen Tera India Will Share Its Underpinnings With The Kylaq

The Brazil-spec Tera uses Volkswagen Group’s MQB-A0 architecture, while the Skoda Kylaq is based on the India-specific MQB-A0-IN platform. Since the Tera and Kylaq share the same 2566mm wheelbase, Volkswagen already has a strong base to adapt the Tera for India.

Volkswagen Tera Vs Skoda Kylaq

Škoda Auto Volkswagen India also has the supplier base, localisation network and engineering experience for a compact SUV of this size. This should make the Tera easier to localise than a completely new SUV project.

Volkswagen Tera Exterior Design Details

Volkswagen Tera Front Exterior Design

The Volkswagen Tera has a clean crossover-like design rather than a tall, upright SUV stance. Up front, it gets swept-back headlamps, a slim upper grille, a large lower air dam and black bumper inserts.

Volkswagen Tera Side Exterior Design

From the side, the Tera gets a sloping roofline, roof rails, black wheel arch cladding and dual-tone alloy wheels. At the rear, it features wraparound tail lamps connected by a gloss-black panel, along with a chunky black bumper.

Overall, the Tera looks like an urban crossover with enough SUV elements to fit into India’s sub-4m SUV segment.

Volkswagen Tera Interior And Features

The Volkswagen Tera gets a simple, clean cabin with a free-standing touchscreen, full-colour LCD instrument cluster, fabric seat upholstery, a conventional gear lever and a manual handbrake.

The Brazil-spec Tera manual confirms features such as VW Play, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Keyless Access, push-button start, auto AC, wireless charging, rear parking sensors, rear camera and driver assistance systems like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Front Assist, Lane Assist and Blind Spot/Side Assist.

India-spec features will depend on Volkswagen’s final variant strategy, but the Tera should share several features with the Kylaq to keep pricing and localisation costs under control. If Volkswagen offer Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in the India-spec Tera like its Brazil-spec version, it could help the SUV stand out from several sub-4m SUV rivals.

Why The Tera Makes Sense For Volkswagen India

The absence of a proper Volkswagen-branded sub-4m SUV in India has become increasingly noticeable.

The Kylaq has already demonstrated that Indian buyers are willing to consider compact Volkswagen Group SUVs with turbo petrol engines. Meanwhile, the sub-4m SUV segment continues to be one of the largest and fastest-growing passenger vehicle categories in India.

With the Tera already existing globally and sharing several fundamentals with Volkswagen Group’s India-focused architecture, the SUV appears to make strong business sense on paper.

Volkswagen Tera Expected Price In India

When launched in India, the Volkswagen Tera is likely to sit close to the Skoda Kylaq in terms of pricing. Since both SUVs are expected to share similar platform fundamentals, engine options and positioning, the Kylaq gives us the clearest reference point for estimating the Tera’s India price.

Volkswagen Tera Front Seat Design

Based on our earlier analysis, we expect the Volkswagen Tera price in India to start around Rs. 8.0 lakh and go up to Rs. 13.50 lakh ex-showroom. This expected price range factors in the Kylaq’s current pricing, Volkswagen’s positioning and some buffer for inflation by the time the Tera goes on sale.

2027 Volkswagen Tera SUV India: What To Expect

The Volkswagen Tera now looks like a strong candidate for Volkswagen India’s long-awaited sub-4m SUV. Its 2566mm wheelbase is identical to the Skoda Kylaq’s, which suggests Volkswagen may only need to rework the bumpers and cladding to bring the India-spec Tera under the 4m mark.

When it goes on sale in India, the Tera is likely to share its 1.0L turbo petrol engine with the Kylaq, Taigun and Virtus. It could also borrow several India-focused features from the Kylaq, including a touchscreen, full-colour LCD instrument cluster, Auto AC, rear AC vents, wireless phone charger, 6 airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

Volkswagen have not officially confirmed the Tera for India yet. However, based on its size, platform, engine compatibility and small-car tax advantage, it now looks more like a probable future Volkswagen SUV than a distant possibility.
