Japanese auto major Nissan had a gaping void in its product portfolio in the form of a lacking full-sized SUV model, a segment in which all its major market rivals have a representative. Nissan has now corrected this by introducing its all-new Terra SUV in the car market of China. The brand new Nissan Terra is a 7-seater full-sized SUV model that will go head on with the likes of the highly established Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and Isuzu MU-X in the premium full-sized SUV segment.
The new Nissan Terra is a ladder-on-frame SUV and shares its underpinnings with the Nissan Navara pick-up truck and the new Mercedes-Benz X-Class. The Terra SUV is bracing up to have its first public appearance at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show later this year.
Like its underpinnings, the new Terra SUV also shares its design language with its pick-up truck sibling – the Navara, and the basic styling philosophy is very much in line to that of the Nissan SUVs. However, the Nissan Terra SUV gets its individual styling features as well to make it stand apart from its pickup truck counterpart and appear more up-class. The SUV comes with newly designed front bumper, while also getting an entirely newly designed rear façade. The Terra comes flaunting attractive LED tail lights and some additional chrome décor on its tail gate to make things more interesting. While the other SUVs from the house of Nissan, like the Pathfinder and the X-Trail are more like crossovers in terms of design, the Terra comes with a more commanding appearance of a traditional SUV.
On the inside, the Terra is identical to the Navara in terms of styling. There’s a regal all black interior theme with a huge touchscreen integrated infotainment system along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, automatic climate control, a multi-function steering wheel and a twin-pod instrument cluster. The Nissan Terra can comfortably accommodate seven adult passengers, and its rear seats can be easily folded to offer an additional cargo space.
Under the hood, the brand new Nissan Terra SUV will get powered by a single choice of 2.3 litre 4-cylinder diesel motor. A 2.5 litre 4-cylinder petrol mill is expected to join the Terra’s lineup at a later date. The SUV will be equipped with the transmission options of a 6 speed manual and a 6 speed automatic gearbox, while AWD system will also be there. The power figures of the engine have not been revealed by the company, but they are expected to be soon out.
Nissan has said that its all-new Terra three-row SUV will be first launched in the car market of China, followed by which it will be offered in some select Asian markets. Nissan hasn’t said anything about launching the Terra in India yet. India is actually a potential market for the new Nissan Terra considering how popular the Fortuner and Endeavour are here, and given the growing demands for all sorts of SUV models in the Indian auto industry. If Nissan can price and equip the Terra right, then this new SUV could prove to be the much needed game changer for the company in India.
