German luxury automaker Audi has revealed the new R8. Scheduled to be launched in 2019, the new R8 gets updated cosmetics and technology. The car also receives an updated suspension package and a sportier stance with some elements derived from R8 GT3 and GT4 race cars. Oliver Hoffman- Technical Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH’s said in a statement, "With around 50 percent shared parts with the R8 LMS GT3 and even 60 percent with the R8 LMS GT4, no other automobile is so close to motor racing as the R8."
Speaking about the upcoming R8, Michael-Julius Renz, managing director of Audi Sport GmbH said, "The R8 occupies a unique position for Audi in every respect. Motorsport is part of our DNA. With around 50 per cent shared parts with the R8 LMS GT3 and even 60 per cent with the R8 LMS GT4, no other automobile is so close to motor racing as the R8."
Under the hood, the 2019 Audi R8 comes powered by a naturally-aspirating V10 engine available but in two states of tune. The output for the standard R8 has been upgraded by 29 bhp and 10 Nm over the previous model. The engine now develops 562 bhp of maximum power and 550 Nm of peak torque, while the V10 Plus renamed as the Performance and produces a whopping 602 bhp of power of the V10. The car is now capable of doing 0- 100 kmph in 3.4 seconds and 3.1 seconds respectively making it quicker by 0.1 seconds. However, the Spyder models get to 100 kmph from standstill in 0.1 second slower than their coupe counterparts. Also, the top speed of the upcoming R8 has been improved to 323 kmph and 321 kmph for the Spyder – while the Performance versions will hit 330 kmph and 328 kmph. Initially, all the trims will offer quattro four- wheel drive, although a cheaper rear- wheel drive variant could follow later if there is sufficient demand.
In terms of design and styling, the upcoming Audi R8 a wider hexagonal grille than before flanked by larger air inlets and topped with a thin air intake as well as large rear wing. The customers can also choose from three design packages to customize the look of their R8 further. Though, the car comes with 19- inch wheels as standard, customers can choose 20- inch versions that come with summer and sport tyres, as well as larger carbon ceramic brakes. The manufacturer has also fitted the R8 with suspension modifications, as well as tuning the optional dynamic steering and electromechanical power steering. Audi claims that it will make the car more precise at all speeds.
At the inside, the new R8 will offer some new color stitching options and Alcantara trim in terms of updates. Apart from this, all the features remain the same for the next- gen R8 as the existing model. The features include six airbags, carbon- ceramic brakes, front and rear parking sensors, reverse parking camera, cruise control, a 12.3- inch Audi Cockpit digital instrument cluster, electrically- adjustable and heated front seats, automatic climate control and a 13- speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system among others.
Also, Audi has offered two new exterior paints choices for the 2019 R8- Ascari Blue and Kemora Grey. Pricing for the new R8 is also likely to be similar to that of the outgoing model, with a starting point just under £130,000 (approx INR 1.22 Crore). Also, according to the rumors in the market, the current R8 will be discontinued in favor of a fully electric supercar, but according to sources inside Audi, the company wants to retain the naturally aspirated V10, as long as it can still be modified to meet emissions standards. Currently, the Audi R8 V10 Plus is priced at Rs 2.72 crore (ex-showroom India). The Audi R8 takes on likes of the Nissan GT-R, Maserati Gran Turismo, Mercedes-Benz GT R, Porsche 911 and the Lamborghini Huracan in the segment.
