The future is here for the global car manufacturing companies. Certainly the global auto industry has made huge leaps in the last few years, and the market trend has changed entirely. Not only the modern car buyers’ requirements and preferences have changed, but government policies have also changed greatly, owing to the menacing pollution issues. Thus, the latest global requirement is the electric technology, whether the car makers like it or not. Nevertheless, along with the environment saving electric technology, there’s something more exciting, and that is autonomous driving technology.

Autonomous cars or driver-less cars have been the dreams of all the global auto giants and also of the car lovers. This dream is not only turning into reality, but is also becoming a highly competitive space even before getting established. This is because all the auto majors are fighting with each other to be the first one to provide fully autonomous cars and grab maximum attention of the modern buyers in the world. While the driver-less car enthusiasm is spreading across the world, South Korea is definitely not falling behind. Besides global giants like Hyundai Motor, other smaller Korean makers like SsangYong Motor are also working hard to keep up with latest global trend to offer self-driving cars.

SsangYong Motor Company, the South Korean subsidiary of the Indian auto major Mahindra & Mahindra, is looking to increase focus on autonomous car technology. The Korean automaker will be increasing efforts to develop advanced automated vehicle technology after attaining a temporary license from the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for testing autonomous vehicles on roads.

This month the Korean auto manufacturing company will commence the road testing of its self-driving technology on a SsangYong Tivoli XLV prototype. The Tivoli XLV based autonomous prototype will be testing a level 3 autonomous technology permit that will allow the vehicle to test on the Korean expressways regularly.

As it is already known, driverless or autonomous cars have to be tested real-time on actual roads, more than any other regular cars in order to check their efficiency in handling various situations and in order to monitor their safety. Testing on the public roads will let SsangYong verify the proficiency, technical reliability and safety of it’s the XLV self-driving vehicle. The vehicle has been braced with various autonomous systems including inter-vehicle distance, lane-keeping and changing as well as speed maintenance among others.

The lane-changing technology detects obstacles on the road while overtaking or changing lanes. If the system detects an obstacle, the human driver is alerted and it stops the vehicle from changing lanes.

SsangYong has been working in collaboration with Korea Automotive Technology Institute for past three years for research and development of autonomous driving technology that is accordance with the Korean government’s vision of partially commercializing level 3 autonomous cars by 2020.

While speaking on the development, the CEO of SsangYong Motor Company, Johng-sik Choi said that the company will continue developing next generation environment friendly automotive technologies in order to ensure future growth momentum and keep up with the fast changing global auto industry.
