After MG, Mahindra, Tata Also Offering Lifetime Warranty On Harrier EV Battery Pack | V3Cars

MG started a new trend in India by offering lifetime warranty on the battery of their electric car, the Windsor EV. Of course, lifetime doesn’t mean the buyer’s lifetime. It doesn’t even mean the car’s lifetime. It only means the first registration, which is 15 years from the date of purchase.. Mahindra followed course and offered the same with their XEV 9e and BE 6, both of which promise lifetime battery warranty. Now, Tata Motors are also following in the footsteps of Mahindra and MG and promising lifetime warranty on the upcoming Harrier EV’s battery pack.

Tata Harrier EV Gets Lifetime Warranty On Battery Pack

MG — Promises Made. Promises Broken. Within 5 Months!

MG made 2 big announcement at the Windsor’s launch:

  1. Early adopters will get unlimited free public charging for the first year
  2. Windsor EV will offer free lifetime battery warranty

They have already walked back on one of these claims. And it only took them only 5 months to do so. The 2nd one mentioned here is yet to start giving them any trouble. And if it does, we can’t expect them to keep their word with the 2nd claim either.

Their literature around the terms and conditions for the battery warranty is nowhere to be found. So, we don’t know what kind of warranty support you will get — if you get any support at all.

Mahindra — Big Promises. Small Commitments.

While showing off their new-generation EVs, Mahindra educated us about LFP batteries. According to their tests and estimates, even after 2000 charge cycles, their LFP battery packs retain more than 85% of their capacity. At 1000 charge cycles, they are at close to 95% capacity.

By this logic, with a 400km-odd realistic range from the smaller battery variants, you can expect to cover 4 lakh km and still have more than 90% battery capacity. But then, we find this hidden somewhere in their documentation:

They are only promising more than 70% of battery health and for up to a maximum of 2,00,000km. According to their own estimates, the car should be well over 95% at 2 lakh kilometres. But they are only willing to give you warranty coverage if the battery health is below 70% and the car has driven less than 2,00,000km. That’s like 500 charge cycles.

Tata Harrier EV — “Lifetime” Battery Warranty

We are yet to find any reliable literature to confirm their terms and conditions for the battery warranty. MG can’t be trusted. Mahindra are making bold claims but playing it safe on the legal side.

With a reputation for offering poor service experience, you shouldn’t expect much from Tata in this regard. For what it is worth, they are claiming to offer “lifetime” warranty on the battery pack of the Harrier EV.
