by V3Cars Team on Thursday, Nov 14 2019

There’s no denying that the Mahindra XUV300 is an expensive option in the sub-compact SUV segment. But it does justify the premium with exclusive and segment-first features as well. If you have zeroed in on the Mahindra XUV300, then read on to find out which variant offers the best value for your money.

    Mahindra XUV300

    Mahindra XUV300 Petrol Prices

First off, let’s start with the prices. The XUV300 petrol prices range from Rs. 8.1 lakh to Rs. 11.64 lakh. The diesel variants are about Rs. 50,000 more expensive than petrol. The reason for such a small gap in price is because the petrol engine also comes with a turbocharger.

    Mahindra XUV300 Petrol Engine Specs

The XUV300’s 1.2-litre petrol engine is turbocharged and makes a healthy 110PS of power and 200Nm of torque. It’s available with a 6-speed manual transmission only. In comparison, the Hyundai Venue and Ford EcoSport’s 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine offer more power. Even the 1.5-litre normal petrol engine of the EcoSport is more powerful. But XUV300’s petrol engine has the most torque and that’s what determines how quickly a vehicle accelerates.

    Mahindra XUV300 Petrol Dimensions Comparison

In terms of dimensions, the XUV300 has a big advantage as it has the longest wheelbase. It’s also the widest in its segment. However, it loses all points in the ground clearance department where the Nexon comes out on top.

Mahindra XUV300 Petrol W4 Variant Standard Features - Rs. 8.1 Lakh - Worth Buying

Right from the base variant, the XUV300 offers basic safety features like 2 airbags, ABS, ISOFIX child seat mounts and reverse parking sensors. There are also disc brakes for all four wheels even in the base W4 variant. In fact, the XUV300 is the only car in its segment to offer disc brakes in the rear wheels.

    Mahindra XUV300

Other features include rear-seat adjustable headrests, 60/40 split rear seats, electrically adjustable outside mirrors, front and rear power windows, front armrest, LED tail lamps, custom steering modes and tyre position indicator.

Notable omissions in the W4 variant include remote central locking, music system and wheel covers. All of these features you can get easily from the aftermarket as and when the need arises. So, even the base variant offers good value with the kind of loopholes that you can fill later.

Mahindra XUV300 Petrol W6 Variant Features - Rs. 8.95 Lakh - Not Recommended

For an additional Rs. 85,000, you can get the W6 variant of the Mahindra XUV300. That will get you the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system and steering-mounted controls. On the functional side, you get a remote central locking with a flippy key and follow me home headlights. Style features include arear spoiler, roof rails, wheel covers and outside door cladding.

While it is a decent upgrade over the W4 variant, the price difference is bigger than it should be. There’s not even Android Auto and Apple Carplay, which makes it even more difficult for us to recommend this variant.

    Mahindra XUV300 W8 Variant Features - Rs. 10.4 Lakh - Best Value

While the W8 variant costs a fair bit more, we believe the features make up for it. For an additional Rs. 1.45 lakh over the W6 variant, the W8 variant gives you safety features like ESP, projector headlamps, fog lamps, parking camera, rear defogger, washer and wiper, hill start assist, alarm for central locking and warning lights on doors. On the entertainment side, you get Apple Carplay, Android Auto and 2 tweeters.

    Mahindra XUV300 Exterior

The functional feature list is expansive. It includes keyless entry with push-button start-stop, cruise control, automatic headlamps, automatic wipers, 3.5-inch colour MID, power-folding outside mirrors, a rear-seat armrest and a dual-zone automatic AC/climate control. For visual pleasure, the W8 variant gets larger, 17-inch alloy wheels with wider 215-section tyres, LED DRLs and leather-wrapped steering wheel among others.

This variant gets enough bells and whistles to easily justify buying the Mahindra XUV300 over any other sub-4m SUV in the segment. Some exclusive features of the variant compared to the segment are larger 17-inch alloy wheels and dual-zone climate control in addition to the others that you get in the lower variants. While the ex-showroom price tag of over Rs. 10.0 lakh might discourage some buyers due to a higher registration fee in their states, we believe you should still consider upgrading to the W8 variant if your budget permits.

    Mahindra XUV300 W8 Variant Features - Rs. 11.64 lakh

Finally, for the feature hungry, there’s the W8 (O) variant, which is Rs. 1.24 lakh more expensive than the W8 variant. For that price, you get a notable number of safety features. The list includes 5 extra airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system, heated outside mirrors, auto-dimming inside mirror, front parking sensors and 3-point seatbelt for the rear centre passenger.

    Mahindra XUV300

It gets extra style points for machined alloy wheels and an electric sunroof.

This variant is suitable for the safety and the style-conscious. And, the features justify the increase in price over the W8 variant. It must be noted that this is the only sub-4m SUV in its class to get a knee airbag for the driver, a 3-point seatbelt for the centre rear passenger, front parking sensors and heated outside mirrors. These features are in addition to all the exclusive features the W8 variant already gets. So, on the surface, even if the XUV300 comes across as expensive, it has enough features to rival the cars from a segment above. These help Mahindra justify the higher price tag of their sub-compact SUV.

If you can afford it, we’d suggest you upgrade to the W8 (O) variant but the W8 variant still comes out as the king of value in the XUV0300 variant lineup.

    Mahindra XUV300 Petrol Best Variant - W8

The W8 variant of the XUV300 comes across as the best value and is our top pick. It has enough to challenge (if not win) the top variants of other sub-4m SUVs and then a few exclusive features. However, if your budget allows and you like to get the best features in a sub-compact SUV, then the W8 (O) variant of the Mahindra XUV300 also is a good value.
