The Maruti Suzuki Swift is a hatchback for buyers who want a compact, efficient and easy-to-drive car with a sporty image. The current 4th-gen Swift uses Maruti’s new 1.2L, 3-cylinder Z12E normal petrol and normal CNG engine. The Swift’s biggest strengths are its mileage, peppy city performance, compact size, brand recall and Maruti Suzuki’s wide service network. However, the switch from a 4-cylinder engine to a 3-cylinder engine has changed its character, and the mid variants are not strong on value.
The new Swift keeps the familiar Swift silhouette, but the details are now sharper. The clamshell-style bonnet is one of the main design highlights and gives the car a sportier look.
Maruti Suzuki have avoided chrome on the new Swift. Instead, the car uses several black elements, including a gloss black grille, smoked-black headlamp housings and black fog lamp surrounds. This helps the Swift look sportier without relying on flashy trim.
The blacked-out A-, B- and C-pillars create a floating-roof effect. Unlike the previous-generation Swift, the rear door handles are now regular pull-type units instead of being hidden near the rear window.
At the rear, the blacked-out tail-lamp housings and C-shaped LED signature add to the sporty theme. The Swift gets a 265L boot, which can hold weekend luggage for 3 adults. The boot lip is fairly high, so loading heavier bags needs some effort.
The Swift’s cabin has an all-black theme with silver contrast trim. The centre console is tilted towards the driver, which gives the cabin a more driver-focussed feel. The view out is clean, though the deep dashboard can make it slightly difficult to judge the front edges of the car.
Higher variants get a 9-inch touchscreen, wireless phone charger, auto AC with physical controls, rear AC vents, USB-A and USB-C ports for rear passengers, push-button start-stop, cruise control and auto LED projector headlamps. The touchscreen is a useful addition, but the thick side bezels make it look larger than it needs to.
The Swift misses a few important comfort features for its price. It does not get a front centre armrest, rear centre armrest, auto-dimming IRVM, TPMS, paddle shifters or telescopic steering adjustment. The lack of telescopic steering is noticeable because the Swift’s low seating position suits a sporty driving posture better when the steering can be adjusted for reach.
Rear seat space is acceptable for 2 adults. There is enough kneeroom and legroom, and rear passengers can slide their feet under the front seats. The headroom is also good, and the large windows help the cabin feel airy despite the black interior theme.
The rear seat gets adjustable headrests for the 2 outer occupants and 3-point seatbelts for all 3 rear passengers. However, the space is best used by 2 adults. The middle position is better suited to a child because there is no centre headrest or rear centre armrest.
The Swift’s new 1.2L, 3-cylinder petrol engine is more mileage-focussed than the older 4-cylinder engine. It is not as smooth or silent as the old engine, but it does not feel rough. It also sounds sporty when pushed and keeps the Swift’s peppy city character alive.
The manual transmission should appeal to buyers who want better control. The AMT is convenient and adapts well to the driver’s style. It downshifts quickly when you need an overtake, and the engine does not feel strained at highway speeds. At 100kmph in 5th gear, the Swift AMT runs at around 2500rpm.
The AMT still has the usual limitations of this transmission type. Slow shifts and head nod are noticeable if you drive enthusiastically, though they do not bother you in most regular driving situations.
In V3Cars’ tests, the Swift AMT returned 13.78kmpl in the city and 22.18kmpl on the highway. With 60 percent city and 40 percent highway use, it returned 16.24kmpl, translating to a running cost of about Rs. 6.29/km based on Delhi petrol prices in June 2026.
The Swift CNG-manual returned 33.13kmpkg in V3Cars’ city test, translating to a running cost of about Rs. 2.51/km based on Delhi CNG prices in June 2026. This gives the CNG a clear running-cost advantage, though the comparison is not perfectly like-for-like because the petrol figure here is from the AMT and the CNG is manual.
The CNG version still feels peppy in the city, even with lower power and torque. It feels more strained at higher RPM, but the clutch is light, the gearshifts are smooth and refinement remains acceptable. The CNG variants make sense if you have regular access to CNG filling stations.
The Maruti Suzuki Swift still has a clear identity. It is compact, efficient, easy to drive and still carries a sporty flavour. The new 3-cylinder engine changes the old Swift character, but it also gives the car strong mileage and good city drivability.
The Swift’s weak points are mostly around features and value. The VXI and VXI (O) variants offer poor value, while the top ZXI Plus still lacks features like front armrest, rear armrest, TPMS, auto-dimming IRVM and telescopic steering adjustment. The CNG variants also miss out on the top ZXI Plus trim and some useful features.
For petrol-manual buyers, the LXI works only as a strict budget option. The VXI and VXI (O) are not recommended. The ZXI is our top recommendation, while the ZXI Plus is for buyers who are willing to compromise on some value for added features.
For petrol-AMT and CNG-manual buyers too, the ZXI variant is our top recommendation. The CNG variants make a lot of sense for buyers with regular CNG access and enough running to justify the higher upfront cost.
