Mahindra launched the 2020 Thar on 2 October 2020 and started accepting bookings for the SUV for a token amount of Rs 21,000. Now, the carmaker has announced that the SUV has received more than 9,000 bookings in four days of commencement.
The Thar is available in three variants: AX, AX(O) and LX. However, the SUV can be had with more than ten configurations depending on seating (4-and 6-seater), type of roof (soft top and hardtop) and type of the powertrain.
Mahindra is offering the new Thar with both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol engine on offer is a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit making 150PS and 300Nm (320Nm with automatic). The diesel engine, on the other hand, is a 2.2-litre unit making 130PS and 300Nm. Both the engines are available either with a 6-speed MT or a 6-speed AT. The new Thar comes with a 4WD system as standard with a locking rear differential.
Features on offer include removable front doors, washable floor, cruise control, fog lamps, height-adjustable driver’s seat, tilt-adjustable steering, manual day/night IRVM, central locking, steering mounted controls, coloured MID, power windows and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Safety features on offer include dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, ISOFIX child seat anchors, electronic stability control, traction control, hill launch assist, hill descent control and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
Deliveries of the Thar will start from 1 November 2020 and test drives for the SUV have begun. Currently, test drives are available in 18 cities only but, Mahindra is believed to up this number to 100 cities soon. In the remaining cities, the test drives will start from 15 October 2020. Prices of the Thar range from Rs 9.80 lakh to Rs 13.75 lakh (ex-showroom India). Currently, it has no direct rivals in the market but Force is expected to launch the new Gurkha soon. Maruti is also working on a 5-door Jimny which will also compete with the Thar when launched. In terms of prices, the Thar competes with other compact SUVs like Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta and Renault Duster.
