Hyundai India are all set to launch the new Exter SUV in the coming weeks. Bookings for the small SUV are already open and the carmaker has also revealed its powertrain options. Since the Exter will offer a CNG powertrain option from its launch day, it could be the first vehicle in its segment to offer a factory-fitted CNG powertrain.

The Hyundai Exter will come with a 1.2L normal petrol and petrol-CNG engine options that already power the Grand i10 Nios hatchback and Aura sedan. Currently, none of the Exter’s rivals offer a factory-fitted CNG option, including the Tata Punch, Citroen C3 and Maruti Suzuki Fronx. However, Tata Motors revealed the Punch CNG at the 2023 Auto Expo, which could spoil Exter’s party.

Tata Motors could snatch the first mover advantage from Hyundai by launching the Punch CNG. Since it was already revealed with its twin CNG cylinder technology at the 2023 Auto Expo, Tata Motors could bring it to the market anytime soon. However, surprisingly enough, Tata Motors chose to open orders for the Altroz CNG first, the launch of which is likely to take place in the coming weeks. Furthermore, we expect Tata Motors to keep some breathing space between the launch of the Altroz CNG and Punch CNG. Hence, it’s safe to assume that the Exter could secure its first mover advantage with the CNG powertrain option.

Hyundai have already opened bookings for the Exter ahead of its launch, which is likely to take place in July. We expect Hyundai to host the global debut of the Exter small SUV in June 2023. The Exter is likely to be priced from Rs. 6 lakh and rival the Tata Punch, Citroen C3 and the non-turbo variants of the Nissan Magnite, Renault Kiger and Maruti Suzuki Fronx.
