Czech automaker Skoda has recently introduced the latest member of its family – the all-new Skoda Scala. The Scala is based on the VW MQB A0 platform, and is a large premium hatchback model with a length of 4362 mm, which makes it comparable with the mid-sized sedans such as the Skoda Rapid and the Volkswagen Vento. Moreover, it has a 2649 mm long wheelbase, which offers more interior space as compared to these sedan models, which makes it a large car. The brand new Skoda Scala is expected to launch in India in the future, and if it really does it will be a niche vehicle in the country.
Here’s a look at the all-new Skoda Scala premium hatchback:
The Skoda Scala comes with stunning exterior styling, which is smooth flowing and highly contemporary thanks to the heavy design inspiration drawn from the Vision RS concept. The sloping roofline offers a coupish look, while its extended rear end really makes it look like a saloon’s slashed down version, although it is not. Skoda’s crystalline design philosophy is showcased in the car’s light consoles, sharp character lines and the stylish 18 inch alloys, offering a patent new-age Skoda car appeal. On the whole, the premium hatch is styled to grab attention, while its elegant design is meant to charm everyone.
As per Skoda, the new Scala will offer cabin space that’s same or even better than that of the Octavia’s on some aspects. Apart from abundant cabin space, the car offers a roomier feel owing to the extensive glass area. Its panoramic roof extends up to the rear windshield, which offers the illusion of the entire roof and half of the tail gate to be a single glass piece. The car also offers a large boot space of 467 litres that’s expandable to 1410 litres with the rear seat folded flat.
The hatch is definitely heavy on premium features which include a new 9.2 inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink support, while the 10.25 inch virtual cockpit is also there as an option. Other features include, all LED headlights and tail lights, dynamic rear turn indicators, powered tail gate, 60:40 split rear seat and much more.
When it comes to safety equipments, the Scala is packed to the brim with techs compared to much more expensive luxury saloons. It boasts of 9 airbags, lane assist, adaptive cruise control, front assist which is auto braking system, side assist that works like blind spot detection system with a claimed longer view, hands-free park assist and rear traffic assist systems to name a few driver’s assist tech suit apart from many other safety features.
In the global markets, the brand new Skoda Scala will come with three engine choices. Its 1.0 litre TSI petrol mill is offered in two tunes - 95 hp and 115 hp; there’s a 1.6 litre diesel engine delivering 115 hp; while a CNG option is also there. All the versions are coupled with a 7 DSG transmission.
India Launch Feasibility
We think that the Skoda Scala’s Indian launch is practically uncertain at the moment. If and when the Scala comes to India, it will belong to a niche segment and won’t be a volume drawer. The Scala is essentially a compact hatchback in the international markets, but a large luxurious hatchback for the Indian audience, most of whom would spend money on premium or entry-level luxury sedans rather than a hatchback. Thus, if the Scala really does come to India, it won’t be a Maruti Baleno or Hyundai i20 rival, but will sit a way above segment where buyers might be difficult to find.
