Baojun Yep Plus Revealed – MG’s Answer To Tata Punch EV? | V3Cars

Baojun, the sister company of MG Motor, have revealed a new electric SUV called the Yep Plus. The Baojun Yep Plus EV is the 5-door version of the Yep 3-door EV. Both electric SUVs are based on the MG Comet EV’s platform. Hence, there is a high chance that MG India could launch the Yep Plus in India to take on the new Tata Punch EV. Read on to know more.

Baojun Yep Plus Design And Dimensions

The Baojun Yep Plus retains the same design language as the Yep, albeit with 5 doors. The Yep Plus features a boxy profile thanks to a flat roofline, and upright bonnet and pillars. Up front, the Yep Plus features a glossy black grille which hides the quad-LED DRLs and LED headlamps. Below the grille, you’ll find a front camera and faux skid plates, which gives the electric SUV a rugged look.

Around the side, the Yep Plus features blacked out pillars and a body-coloured panel on the rear quarter glass a la the Land Rover Defender. Other design highlights include a white roof with roof rails and door-mounted ORVMS with cameras for the 360-degree surround view monitor. The squared-off wheel arches, 5-spoke grey alloy wheels, and black lower cladding add to the SUV design of the Yep Plus.

The slab-sided tailgate and rear window, vertical LED tail lamps and the faux skid plate reminds us of the Ford Bronco Sport that’s currently on sale in North American markets. The side-opening tailgate, similar to the Mahindra Bolero Neo and Ford EcoSport, will be a segment-first when launched in India.

Baojun Yep Plus Powertrain Options

While Baojun are yet to reveal the powertrain specifications of the Yep Plus, we expect it to get a larger battery pack than the Yep 3-door. Currently, the MG Comet, which shares its platform with the Yep, comes with a 17.3kWh battery pack and offers a range of 230km. The Yep features a larger 28.1kWh battery pack and offers a range of 303km. The Yep Plus could feature a bigger battery than the Comet and Yep to rival the Tata Punch EV in India. Based on reports, it could offer a claimed range of 401km, which slots it neatly between the Punch EV’s medium and long range versions. Unlike the Punch EV, the Yep Plus is expected to get a rear axle-mounted electric motor.

Baojun Yep Plus To Launch In India?

MG Motor filed design patents for the Yep 3-door in India last year. Since the Yep is based on the same Global Small Electric Vehicle platform as the Comet EV, we could expect it to arrive on our shores first. We expect the Yep to go on sale in India by 205. MG have already achieved 54% localisation with the Comet EV’s platform and plan to achieve 60% localisation by the end of 2023. With such a high degree of localisation, including batteries sourced from Tata Autocomp, MG could price the Yep quite aggressively in India. The Comet EV is currently priced just under Rs. 10 lakh in India and we could expect the Yep to cost between Rs. 10.0 lakh - Rs. 12.0 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Yep Plus, on the other hand, could arrive by the second half of 2025 with a price tag running from Rs. 12.0 lakh to Rs. 15.0 lakh, which would help it take aim at the recently-launched Tata Punch EV.
