Citroen India Rule Out MPV Bodystyle

Upon being asked about the possibility of an MPV based on the C-cubed platform, Saurabh replied that Citroen India are not looking at MPVs as they carry a commercial image. The carmaker will stick to the popular SUV bodystyle for its product line. However, as per Saurabh, Citroen are currently working on an ‘interesting’ bodystyle, which happens to be the 3rd model based on the C-cubed platform.

Since Citroen already offer a hatchback in the form of the C3 and SUVs like the C3 Aircross and C5 Aircross, their next offering is likely to be a sedan, especially since they have ruled out MPVs altogether.

However, sedans seem to be losing favour among car buyers despite decent sales numbers posted by the likes of the Volkswagen Virtus, Skoda Slavia, Honda City and Hyundai Verna. So what could Citroen do to entice buyers to choose a sedan?

That’s when Citroen’s unique approach to sedans comes into the picture. On the global scheme of things, Citroen offer models like the C4X and C5X, which can be called jacked up sedans. In India, we can also consider the Slavia and Virtus as jacked up sedans since they offer 179mm of ground clearance. However, models like the C4X and C5X carry SUV-ish design owing to the presence of faux skid plates and wheel arch claddings. While the ground clearance of the UK-spec models is nothing to write home about, when this bodystyle is explored for the Indian market, the ground clearance could become the USP of the product.

This upcoming model, which is likely to be called the C3X, was recently spotted on test. While the test mule was covered in heavy camouflage, it does give us a rough idea about its silhouette. Since the C3X will be a crossover sedan, it is likely to come with a high ground clearance and SUV-like styling while also retaining sedan characteristics with an elongated tailgate and tapered roofline.
