Nissan’s cost-efficient brand Datsun is preparing in a big way to launch new products and upgraded models in India in order to crack the highly profitable market. Datsun is going to continue to try wining over the Indian car buyers with new more attractive products that are affordable. It has been confirmed that Datsun is bracing up to launch a new SUV model in India which will be priced below the Rs. 10 lakh mark.
During a recent interview the president of the Nissan India Operations, Thomas Kuehl confirmed that the company will be launching new car models in some new segments of India, which will include an SUV model under the Datsun brand.
Kuehl said that we will be witnessing a Datsun SUV under Rs. 10 lakhs. He added by saying that while he can’t divulge more details about it at the moment, but he can promise that the product will be a killer in the Indian market.
Although Kuehl didn’t divulge any details on the upcoming new Datsun SUV, it is likely to be based on the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s CMF-A platform that will also spawn a new compact MPV from Renault, which would launch in India in the first quarter of 2019. The Datsun SUV is also expected to be a sub-4 meter compact SUV with more crossover styling and would go up against the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Breeza and the likes. The Datsun SUV is expected to get only a single turbocharged engine that’ll be the upgraded version of the Redigo’s 1.0L petrol mill.
The sub-4 meter compact SUV’s launch is keeping in line with the Japanese carmaker’s new strategy for Indian to position all models below the Rs. 10 lakh price mark under the Datsun brand, while all the models above this price mark will be placed under the Nissan name.
Nissan brought the Datsun brand in India in 2014, to compete in the entry level segments of the Indian car market. However, Datsun didn’t find much favour in India due to lack of updates in its line-up and stiffer market competition. Nevertheless, Datsun is gearing up to launch the refreshed models ofthe Go and Go+ during this year’s festive season.
Kuehl accepted the lacks of the brand saying that currently the company doesn’t have a strong product range and it is trying to fix this issue. The company’s life cycle management is also not great at the moment, but there will be an important event every six months from the upcoming festive season onwards, he promised.
The upcoming Datsun Go and Go+ facelifts will get cosmetic updates and added features like new touchscreen system, new front seats and more. Datsun will be also focusing more on the safety aspect and both these models with be endowed with dual airbags and ABS. They will also get ESC (Electronic Stability Control), which will be a first-in-class feature.
Kuehl also revealed that the company will also launch a special edition model of the Redigo during the festive season, and that he is positive that the model will have a major impact in its own class.
