    India-Bound New Volvo S60 Officially Revealed

    Swedish luxury automaker Volvo has revealed the new S60 at the company’s first US manufacturing plant in Charleston, South Carolina. Also, the mid-size premium sports saloon is the first Volvo car to be sold without a diesel engine taking Volvo’s commitment to electrification forward. Apart from this, the second-gen S60 becomes the first Volvo to be built in America. The newly revealed S60 will also make its way to the Indian market sometime in 2019.

    Under the hood, the 2019 Volvo S60 will be offered with two turbocharged and supercharged plug-in hybrid petrol engines- 2.0-litre T8 Twin Engine which produces a combined output of 390 HP of power with the 303 HP petrol engine sending power to the front wheels and the 65 kW electric unit powering the rear axle. With the peak torque of 640 Nm, this model will be capable of doing 0-100 kmph in just 4.9 seconds and will offer a top speed of 250 kmph. Apart from this, the T8 Twin Engine option will also be offered in a ‘Polestar Engineered’ variant, developed by Volvo’s new performance sub-brand, Polestar. The tweaked engine ECU will boost the combined power output to 415 HP while other upgrade includes revamped wheels, brakes and suspension. Also, the Polestar Engineered S60 produces 670 Nm of torque and is 0.2 seconds faster than the standard version and the base variant of the saloon will come powered by a 250 HP 2.0-litre turbocharged engine in the T5 trim while there will also be a T6 variant with a supercharged unit with a power output of 310 HP. All the engines will come mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission across all the models.

    Built on Volvo’s SPA platform, the new S60 will be offered with typical Volvo features such as the signature Volvo grille and the Thor hammer headlamps at the front. The side profile gets strong character lines as well as the new design alloy wheels, while the rear adorns C- shaped elongated LED tail-lights. The design shows that the S60 will be inspired by its elder sibling S90. In terms of dimension, the premium sedan measures 4761 mm in length, 2040 mm in width and 1431 mm in height and gets a wheelbase of 2872 mm.

    At the interior, the 2019 Volvo S60 will be offered with features and design inspired by the XC60 by Volvo. The saloon gets the dashboard, tablet-like touchscreen infotainment system, 3-spoke steering wheel and the all-digital instrument cluster largely similar to the XC60 SUV along with other features like Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, climate control AC, panoramic sunroof, reverse parking camera and leather upholstery.

    Other than these, the upcoming Volvo S60 will also come with the City Safety with Autobrake technology that assists the driver in avoiding potential collisions, and is the only system on the market to recognize pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. The City Safety feature now also engages auto braking to mitigate oncoming collisions. Another important feature is the optional Pilot Assist system – which supports the driver with steering, acceleration and braking on well-marked roads up to 80mph that has been upgraded with improved cornering performance. The Run-off Road Mitigation, Oncoming Lane Mitigation and other steering-assistance systems along with the optional Cross Traffic Alert with autobrake further enhances safety for people inside and outside the car.

    Also, Volvo is offering the next-gen S60 via Volvo Cars’ new premium subscription service, Care by Volvo, which offers car access with no down payment via a monthly flat-fee subscription rather than ownership. The Care by Volvo initiative by the Swedish automaker has been introduced to make having a car transparent, easy and hassle-free.

    Volvo’s new Charleston factory, where the S60 will be built, cost about Rs 6,940 crore and has been under construction since 2015. Initially, it will employ around 1,500 people expanding to 4,000 when it reaches its full capacity of 1,50,000 cars annually. Other than the S60, Volvo will also manufacture the next generation XC90 that is expected to be launched in 2021. When launched, the 2019 S60 will take against the likes of the Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the BMW 3 Series in the market.
