Iconic British luxury auto brand Jaguar Land Rover (JRL) is all set to introduce its new turbocharged petrol engine in the Indian auto market. The recently introduced Range Rover Velar will be the first car model from JLR in India which will be equipped with the company’s newly developed 2.0 litre Ingenium turbocharged petrol engine. This new petrol motor is also likely to soon be featured under the hoods of other Jaguar and Land Rover branded vehicles in India. Jaguar Land Rover has apparently confirmed to media that the company will be rolling out its all-new 2.0 litre Ingenium petrol mill in all the models across its Indian product portfolio.
Jaguar Land Rover, which is owned by the Indian auto major Tata Motors, currently offers the XE, XF and XJ models carrying the Jaguar brand in India, while the Land Rover models in India at present include the Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque. All these JLR models in India are offered with 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine options. However, these petrol motors are aging and have been getting carried over from the time when American auto major Ford used to own Jaguar and Land Rover. On the other hand, the newly developed 2.0 litre 4-cylinder petrol engines are fully developed by Jaguar Land Rover and are part of the brand’s new modular Ingenium engine range.
These all aluminum advanced engines utilize an electro-hydraulic valvetrain and come empowered with an integrated exhaust manifold. According to JLR, the new Ingenium petrol engines have the capability to deliver up to 25 percent more power than that of the engines which they replace, while they are also more frugal at the same time, and consume up to 15 percent less fuel. JLR offers three versions of the new 2.0L Ingenium petrol mill, a single-scroll turbo version offering 200hp, a 250hp and a 300hp version that utilize a twin-scroll turbocharger.
Jaguar Land Rover India has not yet announced the exact timeline for the petrol engine updates in the country. However, it is expected that the new 200hp and 250hp Ingenium petrol units will soon be replacing the ongoing old petrol mills on the Jaguar XE and XF. The 250hp Ingenium unit will also replace the current 240hp petrol mill on the Land Rover Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque, in the next few months. The 250hp version of the new engine is also likely to make its way under the hood of the Jaguar F-Pace eventually. However, the Jaguar XJ has been strangely left out from this engine upgrade. The top-end 300hp Ingenium petrol version could come to India on the Jaguar F-Type.
With the decline of the polluting diesel powered vehicles, JLR is betting big on the petrol models like many other carmakers in India. The Indian market is again leaning towards petrol cars and the Velar petrol version is garnering greater interest which was unlikely even more recently among the diesel loving luxury SUV buyers in India. The Velar deliveries will commence in India from 20th January, 2018.
