Jaguar’s design boss wants to resurrect the XK

by V3Cars Team on Wednesday, Oct 25 2017

There’s hope for the fans of the striking Jaguar XK, as it might be coming back to life. The gorgeous XK was put to sleep back in 2014 after two generation models, which were produced for about two decades. The Jaguar XK was replaced by the company with the fabulous new F-Type. However, the F-Type is a fascinating luxury sports car rather than a grand tourer. Thus, the Jaguar XK aficionados may still be sorely missing the car even with the F-Type in place. However, as mentioned above the Jaguar XK might get resurrected by the company, if its design boss can convince the company to do so.

Ian Callum, Jaguar’s design head has clearly said that he is not happy about the discontinuation of the XK. And thus, the Jaguar XK could eventually be brought back as a proper 4-seater grand tourer to go on sale alongside the sporty 2-seater F-Type.

While speaking his mind out at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance earlier this year, Callum told a British automotive journal that he wishes to have both a 2-seater and a 2+2 (4-seater) models. He added by saying that the company is currently working on a new product. However, nothing has been yet approved, but the team has initiated the process of designing a new product, because that is what he and his team do.

In a recent interview last month with the same journal, Callum said that the decision of dropping XK caused him much frustration. He further added by saying that he has very different ideas about fast cars which can also accommodate four people. This certainly sounds like a Callum is hinting towards a grand tourer. It seems like he is most probably thinking about a car which a quite a bit bigger than that of the 2-seater F-Type.

However, although it is quite apparent that Callum was never happy about the fact that XK was killed and would like to bring it back again, it might be hard to convince the higher officials at Jaguar who are only concerned about sales figures and nothing else. If the Jaguar officials also agree that there are actually demands in the market for a proper blue blood Grand Tourer alongside a sports coupe, then the Jaguar XK can actually be brought back to life (or its successor) selling alongside the Jaguar F-Type. As per the earlier reports, Jaguar was actually working on a true successor to the XK model, but the project was shelved to make room for the F-Type. Sort of confirming these reports Callum had said that the F-Type was originally never meant to replace the XK.

For the time being, it seems like building the XK successor is more what Callum wishes to do rather than a confirmed product plan from Jaguar. It will be really nice to see two coupes from Jaguar with two different target audiences. It also sounds like a very feasible and wise plan for Jaguar to offer a 4-seater XK successor for grand touring duties, while the F-Type could be made even sportier.
