In this January 2024 car sales analysis article, we’ll look at the YoY and MoM change in sales figures of all hatchbacks in India. Where applicable, we’ll also include our observations based on the sales data and possible reasons behind a massive increase or drop in sales. Lastly, the table with monthly sales of all hatchbacks for the last 6 months will give you an idea about their 6-month sales trend.
Hatchbacks Segment January 2024 Car Sales - YoY Change
- Maruti Nexa Baleno: Maruti Nexa Baleno witnessed a significant increase in sales with a YoY change of 20.01%. This indicates a positive trend, and Baleno remains a popular choice among customers.
- Maruti Suzuki WagonR: WagonR experienced a decrease in sales with a YoY change of -13.24%. This decline might be due to various factors such as changing consumer preferences or increased competition in the segment.
- Maruti Suzuki Swift: The Swift also saw a decrease in sales with a YoY change of -6.51%. Despite the decrease, Swift remains one of the top-selling hatchbacks in the market.
- Maruti Suzuki Alto K10: Alto K10 showed a significant decline in sales, experiencing a YoY change of -42.11%. This could be attributed to increased competition in the entry-level hatchback segment or changes in customer preferences.
- Hyundai i20: Hyundai i20 witnessed a decrease in sales with a YoY change of -13.46%. Despite the decline, i20 continues to be a strong player in the B2 segment.
- Hyundai Grand i10 Nios: Grand i10 Nios also saw a decrease in sales with a YoY change of -21.63%. The competition in the B1 segment might be impacting its sales.
- Tata Tiago: Tiago experienced a considerable decrease in sales with a YoY change of -28.23%.
- Tata Altroz: Altroz had a slight decrease in sales with a YoY change of -13.04%. However, it continues to maintain a decent position in the B2 segment.

Top Gainers:
- Maruti Suzuki Celerio: Celerio showed the highest positive YoY change of 28.91%, indicating increased popularity and acceptance in the market.
- Toyota Glanza: Glanza also experienced a positive YoY change of 12.41%, suggesting that it is gaining traction among consumers.
- Renault Kwid: Kwid had an extraordinary YoY change of 1350.85%, making it the top gainer.

Top Losers:
- Maruti Nexa Ignis: Ignis had the highest negative YoY change of -55.53%, indicating a significant decline in sales. This could be due to factors like changing market preferences or increased competition.
- Maruti Suzuki Alto K10: As mentioned earlier, Alto K10 faced a substantial decline in sales with a YoY change of -42.11%, making it one of the top losers.
In addition, the entry of electric vehicles like the MG Comet EV and Hyundai Ioniq 5 in the hatchback segment (A and C2 segments, respectively) signifies the growing trend towards electric mobility, although the sales numbers are relatively low compared to traditional hatchbacks.

Hatchback Segment January 2024 Car Sales - MoM Change
- Maruti Nexa Baleno: Baleno showed a substantial MoM change of 83.99%, indicating a significant increase in sales. This could be attributed to various factors such as promotional activities, market demand, or seasonal trends.
- Maruti Suzuki WagonR: WagonR also experienced a substantial MoM change of 106.99%, suggesting a significant surge in sales. The model might have benefited from promotional campaigns or other market dynamics.
- Maruti Suzuki Swift: Swift saw a positive MoM change of 29.78%, indicating a healthy increase in sales. This could be due to factors like year-end promotions or customer preferences.
- Maruti Suzuki Alto K10: Alto K10 witnessed an extraordinary MoM change of 396.40%, reflecting a massive spike in sales. This could be attributed to various factors such as year-end promotions, inventory clearance, or other market dynamics.
- Hyundai i20: i20 showed a positive MoM change of 54.85%, suggesting an increase in sales. The model continues to attract customers in the B2 segment.
- Hyundai Grand i10 Nios: Grand i10 Nios also experienced a positive MoM change of 30.84%, indicating an increase in sales compared to the previous month.
- Tata Tiago: Tiago had a positive MoM change of 33.59%, reflecting an increase in sales. This could be attributed to marketing strategies or customer demand.
- Tata Altroz: Altroz saw a positive MoM change of 20.93%, indicating a healthy increase in sales. The model maintains a positive trend in the B2 segment.
- Maruti Suzuki Celerio: Celerio had an exceptional MoM change of 1683.81%, reflecting a massive increase in sales. This could be due to various factors, including promotions or customer demand.
