In this July 2023 car sales analysis article, we’ll look at the YoY and MoM change in sales figures of all SUVs in India. We’ll also share our observations based on the sales data and possible reasons behind a massive increase or drop in sales, where applicable. Lastly, the table with monthly sales of all SUVs for the last 6 months will give you an idea about their 6-month sales trend.
SUV Segment July 2023 Car Sales - YoY Change
- There are currently 39 SUVs on sale in the Indian car market, out of which, 13 belong to the B2-segment(34%). The segment-wise distribution of the SUV in India is as follows:
- A-segment – 0
- B1-segment – 1
- B2-segment – 13
- C1-segment – 9
- C2-segment – 5
- D1-segment – 7
- D2-segment – 3
- Single SUV from the B1-segment sells more units than the C2 and D2-segments combined.
- Among the SUVs, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Hyundai Creta were the top 2 sellers in July, with 16,543 and 14,062 units sold, respectively.
- Amongst the mass-market cars in the category, Scorpio-N and Scorpio Classic pair was the top gainer with 176% YoY gains in July comparison analysis. Thar was the second best gainer in YoY comparison in July with 45.60% gains.
- 7 SUVs made it into the 5-figure club in July - Brezza, Creta, Fronx, Scorpio pair and Venue.
- Among the notable top losers were Jeep’s Compass and Meridian with over 60% YoY drop in sales each.
- Honda WR-V, Maruti Suzuki S-Cross, Nissan Kicks, Toyota Urban Cruiser and Mahindra Alturas G4 were discontinued over the past year.

SUV Segment July 2023 Car Sales - MoM Change
- Kia Seltos was the top gaining mass market SUV with just over 172% MoM rise in July comparison analysis.
- Thar followed the seltos with 35% MoM rise in July over June 2023.
- Volkswagen Taigun and Jeep Compass were the third top MoM gainer in July 2023 MoM analysis, with an improvement of over 31% over its June sales figures.
- Amongst the mass-market losers, Citroen C3 was the top loser with about 62% MoM decline, followed by Sonet with around 45% decline in MoM numbers in July comparison.
