Wagon R has been one of the most loved cars by Maruti Suzuki in the Indian market. The automaker has been preparing to bring the next- gen Wagon R in the country in 2019 and the hatchback has been spotted testing undisguised ahead of its launch in the country. Earlier, the electric version of the upcoming Wagon R has been spotted testing and this is the first time that the standard version of the upcoming Wagon R has been spied undisguised. The 2019 WagonR hatchback will enter production at the company plant in Manesar in the coming weeks. It will replace the current model and will be offered in two styles of Regular and Sting- Ray.
According to the spied image, the hatchback will continue to offer its tallboy design, though based on a new platform making the car lighter, stronger, longer and wider than before. The 2019 Wagon R will be shorter than the outgoing model but will offer better handling and driving experience. Also, while the existing model lacks in meeting the safety and crash test norms, the upcoming Wagon R, on the other hand will be in line with all the norms. Though, the leaked images are quite blurry but it definitely gives an idea about the exterior designing of the upcoming Wagon R. At the rear, it gets Ertiga like design and styling with the tall and butch stance. Also, the spotted test mule is a five- seater version.
Currently, Maruti Suzuki sells the 4th generation Wagon R in the Indian market and didn’t launch the fifth gen model in the country. The reason behind the 5th gen Wagon R not launching in the country is because of the new Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program with stricter crash test regulations. The 2019 model will be the 6th gen Wagon R that will be on sale in India and will meet these new safety regulations. The features include dual front airbags, ABS, EBD, reverse parking sensors and speed warning system. It will also see some refinement in its interiors offering better driver and passenger comforts as well as a touchscreen infotainment system.
To be offered in LX, LXI, VXI and VXI Plus variants, the next- gen Wagon R will come powered by the same 1- liter, 3- cylinder K- Series petrol engine churning out 67 bhp of maximum power and 90 Nm of peak torque. The engine will continue to come mated to a 5- speed manual or AMT gearbox and is slated to be offered with CNG- Petrol and LPG- Petrol dual fuel options in selected markets as well. The current version comes priced between Rs 4.18 lakh and Rs 5.39 lakh (ex- showroom, Delhi). The new- gen model is expected to be priced somewhere in the same price bracket. When launched, the next- gen Maruti Suzuki Wagon R will continue to take against the likes of the Tata Tiago, Renault Kwid and Hyundai Santro in the segment.
