Mahindra Alturas G4 VS Toyota Fortuner VS Ford Endeavour

by Monalisa Saha on Tuesday, Nov 27 2018

The Indian auto industry is growing at a fast pace and the competition is heating up simultaneously. Keeping in line with the global car markets, the Indian car market is also experiencing the SUV fever lately. When SUVs are concerned, India always had affinity towards the full-fledged 7-seater traditional SUV models and the large premium SUV segment of the country has been dominated by the Toyota Fortuner and its arch rival the Ford Endeavour. Although newer contenders like the Isuzu MU-X is there too, when it comes to the premium massive sports utility vehicles, nothing beats Toyota and Ford in India.

Indian SUV master Mahindra & Mahindra is now bent on breaking this dominance of its Japanese and American rivals in the premium SUV segment. Thus, Mahindra has launched the all-new Alturas G4.

For the uninitiated, Mahindra had launched the more affordable first-gen Ssangyong Rexton from the stable of its South Korean subsidiary in the Indian premium SUV segment, without much of success. It is thought that the unknown Ssangyong brand name in India is to be blamed for the Rexton’s failure in the country. Thus, the all improved new-gen Rexton G4 has been rebranded as the Mahindra Alturas G4 specifically for the Indian market.

We are comparing the specifications of the newly launched Mahindra Alturas G4 against its highly accomplished rivals – the segment leader Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour. Take a look:

    Mahindra Altrus
    Toyota Fortuner
    Ford Endeavor

Size does matter in this segment, and when the dimensions are concerned, the Ford Endeavour is the longest among the three at 4,892 mm. The brand new Mahindra Alturas G4 comes next with 4,850 mm length. Surprisingly, the Toyota Fortuner is the shortest among the trio at 4,795 mm.

The Alturas G4 is the widest among the three SUV with 1,960 mm width. The Endeavour and Fortuner are very close at 1,860 mm and 1,855 mm respectively.

The Alturas is a tad taller than its major rivals at 1,845 mm. The Endeavour is 1,837 mm high, while the Fortuner is 1,835 mm tall, almost the same.

The Alturas G4 has the longest wheelbase, measuring 2,865 mm. The Endeavour follows closely at 2,850 mm. Fortuner is again the last with a significantly shorter wheelbase at 2,745 mm.

Thus, the Mahindra SUV is the largest here and also offers the best interior space given the longest wheelbase.

When it comes to the engine choices, the Mahindra Alturas G4 offer only a single 2,1 57cc 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that has the capability to deliver 181 PS and 420 Nm. It gets coupled with a sophisticated 7 speed automatic transmission sourced from Mercedes-Benz.

The Ford Endeavour offers two diesel engine choices - a base 2,198cc 4-cylinder turbocharged motor delivering 160 PS and 385 Nm, and a 3,198cc 5-cylinder oil burner generating 200 PS and 470 Nm, which is the most powerful motor among the three SUVs compared here. The smaller diesel engine gets a 6 speed manual option, while both the units get a 6 speed automatic gearbox.

The Toyota Fortuner is the only Sub in this comparison that also comes in a petrol avatar. 2,694cc petrol mill generates 166 PS and 245 Nm. The 2,755cc diesel motor offers 177 PS and 420 Nm. The petrol gets paired with a 5 speed manual transmission, while the diesel gets a 6-speed MT. Both the engines get a 6 speed automatic option.

    Off-roading Capabilities

All the three SUV in this comparison are great off-roaders, braced with full-fledged All Wheel Drive systems. The Alturas G4 and the Fortuner comes with a low range transmission. The Endeavour offers something better with its advanced terrain management system with Sand, Snow and Rock modes. The trio gets the hill descent control feature, while the Endeavour again offers a hill launch function, which is obviously a plus.

The Mahindra Alturas G4 is the most affordable among the three, in keeping with Mahindra pricing capabilities. The Alturas G4 comes with a price range of Rs. 26.95 lakhs to Rs. 29.95 lakhs (ex-showroom, across India).

The Ford Endeavour’s price range is Rs. 29.57 lakhs to Rs. 32.09 lakhs.

Finally, the Toyota Fortuner comes with a price range of Rs. 27.27 lakhs to Rs. 32.97 lakhs.

We do hope that the aggressive looking, massive and the cheapest Mahindra Alturas G4 does finds great success in the home market.
