Mahindra are extensively testing the Thar 5 Door across the country and a fresh set of images were recently captured by one of our readers in Leh, Ladakh. Read on to know more about the upcoming Mahindra Thar 5 Door.

The Thar spotted in Leh was seen with halogen-based headlights. However, recent spy shots confirmed projector LED headlights for hiher variants of the production-spec Thar 5 Door. A new spy shot also revealed the Thar 5 Door's new steering wheel, which is broowed from the XUV700, and a larger touchscreen infotainment system as well. These new features are likely to make the Thar 5 Door feel more upmarket than its 3 Door sibling.

Apart from the new touchscreen infotainment system, the new Thar 5 Door is also likely to offer a lot more creature comfort features over the Thar 3 Door. These features could include front and rear armrests, an updated instrument cluster, rear AC vents, automatic climate control, and a reverse parking camera. An earlier image of the Thar 5 Door confirmed a single-pane electric sunroof on a metal roof for the SUV.
The spy shots of the Thar 5 Door reveal its silhouette and key design elements. The Thar 5 Door boasts a longer wheelbase than the Thar 3 Door and the increased length should free up more space for 2nd row passengers as well as increase boot space. In terms of design, the Thar 5 Door features round headlights, Mahindra’s signature grille with vertical slats, and external hinges for the bonnet release.

Around the side, the Thar 5 Door is likely to offer a new design for the 18-inch alloy wheels, accompanied by squared-off wheel arches and exposed hinges on the doors. The new spy shots also reveal the rear door handles placed on the C-pillar rather than under the windowline. At the rear, the Thar 5 Door will continue to offer LED tail lights and a boot-mounted spare wheel.

In terms of powertrains, we expect the new Thar 5 Door to retain the same 2.2L turbo diesel and the 2.0L turbo petrol engine options as the Thar 3 Door. However, both engines could offer more power and torque than the Thar 3 Door to overcome the extra weight. Both engine options are likely to come with manual and automatic transmission options along with 2WD and 4WD drivetrains. In the Scorpio N, the 2.2L turbo diesel engine comes in 2 states of tune — 130PS and 175PS. We expect Mahindra to offer the Thar 5 Door diesel with the higher power output while the Thar 5 Door petrol is expected to produce 200PS of power from its 2.0L turbo petrol engine.

While earlier rumours suggested Mahindra could launch the Thar 5 Door by the end of 2023, the spokesperson for the brand confirmed it will only go on sale in 2024. Hence, it is safe to say that Mahindra could reveal the Thar 5 Door in early 2024 and launch it soon after. When launched, the new Thar 5 Door will not have any direct rivals, save for the Force Gurkha 5 Door, which is also slated for a 2024 launch.
