Maruti Suzuki Celerio Scores 3-Star Safety Rating From Global NCAP | V3Cars
The 2025 Celerio has secured a 3-star safety rating from the Global NCAP. The Maruti hatchback, which now offers 6 airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as standard, scored a 3-star rating for adult occupant protection and a 2-star rating for child occupant protection. Here’s a closer look at how the Celerio fared in the Global NCAP’s ‘Safer Cars For India’ test.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio Tested With Updated Safety Kit
Global NCAP evaluated the Celerio in its latest configuration, which now comes with 6 airbags and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) as standard. These additions have helped the car improve its overall score compared to the earlier 2-airbag version, which had scored lower in previous assessments. Despite the upgrade, Global NCAP noted that the bodyshell and footwell area were unstable in the frontal crash test, limiting the scope for a higher rating.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio Adult Occupant Protection Explained
In the adult occupant protection (AOP) test, the Celerio achieved 18.04/34 points, translating into a 3-star rating.
Frontal impact: Head protection was rated adequate for the driver and good for the front passenger. Neck protection was good for both occupants. However, chest protection was rated weak for the driver and adequate for the passenger. Knee protection was assessed as marginal due to potential contact with hard structures behind the dashboard.
Side impact: The side barrier test showed marginal protection for the head and chest, adequate protection for the abdomen and good protection for the pelvis.
Side pole test: Head and pelvis protection were rated good, while chest and abdomen protection remained marginal.
Global NCAP also confirmed that the ESC system met performance requirements, which contributed positively to the overall score.
Maruti Suzuki Celerio Child Occupant Protection Explained
The Celerio scored 18.57/49 points in the child occupant protection (COP) test, resulting in a 2-star rating.
Frontal impact: The forward-facing child seat for the 3-year-old dummy allowed excessive head movement, leading to poor neck and chest protection. The rearward-facing seat used for the 18-month-old also showed head exposure, with chest protection rated poor.
Side impact: The child seat for the 18-month-old provided full protection, while the 3-year-old’s seat failed to fully contain the head.
Although the Celerio offers 3-point seatbelts for all seats and ISOFIX mounts for the rear outboard seats, the inability to switch off the front passenger airbag and the lack of child seat approval for certain seating positions negatively affected the child safety score.
Standard Safety Features On Maruti Suzuki Celerio
As tested by Global NCAP, the Maruti Suzuki Celerio offers the following safety features as standard:
- 6 airbags
- Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
- ABS with EBD
- 3-point seatbelts for all seats with reminders
- ISOFIX child seat mounts (rear outboard seats)
- Seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters for front seats
- Rear parking sensors
- Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
- Compliance with pedestrian protection norms
What This Rating Means For Buyers
The Celerio’s 3-star adult safety rating shows a clear improvement over earlier Maruti hatchbacks, especially with 6 airbags and ESC now standard. However, the unstable bodyshell rating and average child occupant protection indicate that buyers who prioritise top-tier safety may want to consider alternatives with stronger structural integrity and higher Global NCAP scores.
