Maruti Suzuki has halted the production of the diesel version of Ignis in India and is likely to be discontinued in the country. The reason behind the halt is said to be due to very less customer demand. With premium pricing and the fact that it was available only at the Nexa showrooms resulted in low sales numbers as compared to what was expected.
According to a Maruti Suzuki Nexa dealer in Mumbai, "We are not taking any bookings for the Ignis diesel model and this is essentially because of the low demand of the car with that fuel type." Similarly, a dealer in Chennai stated, "The diesel version of the Ignis costs close to 8 lakhs and that's a lot of money for a small diesel car. Hence, more customers are opting for the petrol variant as it has all the features." However, not only in Chennai and Mumbai but dealers from other cities such as Delhi, Kolkata, Pune, Bangalore, Chandigarh and others have also confirmed the news and the diesel version of the hatch is likely to be discontinued in the country as well.
Currently, Maruti Suzuki authorized dealers in Delhi are offering benefits of up to Rs 70,000 on the Ignis. While the manual version of the diesel variants offer a cash discount of Rs 35,000, the AMT can be availed with a cash discount of Rs 40,000. Additionally, the dealers are also offering an exchange bonus of Rs 25,000 and corporate bonus of Rs 3,100 on all Ignis models. Cash discount on offer on the petrol Ignis with the manual gearbox is of Rs 25,000 while the AMT is available with a cash discount of Rs 35,000.
The Maruti Suzuki Ignis was launched in India in January 2017 and since then it has been a popular car especially amongst an urban audience. The Ignis had offered a great alternative to the customers who wanted a fully loaded hatchback but did not want to buy a car as large as the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. The Ignis was also the first offering by Maruti Suzuki to get petrol and diesel engines with both a manual and automatic gearbox on both engine options. However, the launch of 2018 Maruti Suzuki Swift affected the Ignis more in terms of looks, styling, features, performance and the most important pricing. Swift has already been one of the best sellers by the automaker in the country and the newly launched version of the premium hatchback has taken over all the rivals as well as other Maruti Suzuki products in the segment. Hence, the existence of Ignis became pointless after the launch of 2018 Swift.
Recently, the 2018 Maruti Suzuki Swift achieved a milestone of selling more than 1 lakh units of the car within 5 months of its launch in the country and has proved to be the most loved hatch by Maruti Suzuki in the country once again. However, till now there is no official confirmation from the manufacturer on either the Ignis diesel version production being halted or the discontinuation of the car.
