It is a well known fact that Mercedes-Benz is busy working on several new models at a time. Among the many upcoming Mercedes models that are on the anvil, the new GLE is one. The model is expected to come in its all new avatar later this year. The recent spy pictures show the 4th generation Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV’s test prototype model with minimal veils which offer a sneak peek at the vehicle’s exterior changes.
The next generation Mercedes GLE will flaunt an all-new design language which gets some design cues from the new-gen A-Class and the new CLS which showcase the brand new design philosophy. In keeping with the German luxury auto major’s latest styling language, the next-gen GLE also flaunts a new single slat front grille, newly designed sharp angular headlights, a revised front bumper and larger air dams, making the SUV bolder and more aggressive than its predecessor. The rear design looks neat and smart with less creases and new sleeker tail lights. The side profile seems to be mostly unchanged, but flaunts more pronounced wheel arches and tweaked C-pillar that makes the SUV less boxy looking. The rear quarter glass keeps the same shape which has been unchanged since the SUV’s inception back in 1998, but seems to be smaller than before.
Although the next-gen GLE’s cabin hasn’t been spied yet, it can be figured out that the car’s interior is heavily camouflaged to hide the updates. Nevertheless, few features can be ascertained such as the new dashboard layout similar to that of the new E-Class with twin floating display and four AC vents placed on the centre console. It is also expected to offer a touchpad-type control unit for the infotainment system and Mercedes-Benz’s0 new MBUX system that was introduced on the new A-Class.
The upcoming new-gen GLE SUV is likely to share its powertrains with the current generation E-Class, which is available with three engine choices. The engine range includes a 2.0 litre petrol engine offering 184 PS of max power and 300 Nm of top torque, a 2.0 litre diesel motor that offers 194 PS and 400 Nm and a 3.0 litre V6 diesel unit that delivers 258 PS and 620 Nm. All the three engines have been paired with Mercedes-Benz’s sophisticated 9G-Tronic 9 speed automatic transmission gearbox.
The Mercedes-Benz GLE, as it is now known was earlier known as the M-Class. The 3rd generation model of the SUV was introduced back in 2011, and then during its facelift in 2015, it was renamed as the GLE going by the company’s new nomenclature.
The all new Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV is likely to be launched in global markets by the end of the current calendar year. For the Indian car market, the new-gen SUV can be expected to come sometime in 2019. In India, the current generation Merc GLE has a price range of Rs. 66.48 lakhs to Rs. 77.05 lakhs (ex-showroom). The Mercedes GLE goes up against the likes of the BMW X5, Audi Q7, Porsche Macan, Jaguar F-Pace, Land Rover Discovery, Volvo XC90 and Jeep Grand Cherokee.
