Nissan Confirm Next-Gen Renault Duster-Based SUV – Is Terrano Coming Back? | V3Cars
The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance recently announced their future plan for the Indian market, which includes a slew of new models. Renault and Nissan have revised the details of their partnership and confirmed a range of SUVs that will be shared between the 2 carmakers in India. Both carmakers also confirmed a Nissan-based SUV based on the next-gen Renault Duster. Will the new Nissan SUV revive the defunct Terrano nameplate?
Next-Gen Duster Derived Nissan SUV Confirmed
Nissan currently only offer the Magnite B2-segment SUV and Kicks C-segment SUV in the country. While Nissan managed to sell a little over 2,000 units of the Magnite in Decemer 2022, they failed to find a single buyer for the Kicks SUV. Hence, we expect Nissan to replace the Kicks with a brand new C-segment SUV.

The carmaker has confirmed that both Nissan and Renault will share a range of products in India and it will also include SUVs. The next-gen Duster is in the works and it will go up against C-segment SUVs, such as the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Volkswagen Taigun. Even though the details about the upcoming SUVs from both the brands are scarce, they are likely to share the same platform and powertrains but offer unique exterior and interior design.
The next-gen Duster is likely to sit on the CMF-B platform, which will be further localised for our market. Renault did the same with the CMF-A+ platform that currently underpins the Renault Triber, Renault Kiger and the Nissan Magnite. Furthermore, the localised CMF-B platform will also underpin other vehicles tailored for the Indian market.

In terms of powertrain, we expect both the next-gen Duster and its Nissan derivative to come with petrol engine options. Renault-Nissan could continue with the same 1.5L normal petrol engine and 1.3L turbocharged petrol engine that’s offered in the Kicks. Additionally, since Renault have been testing the Arkana hybrid on Indian roads, both carmakers could also consider strong hybrid powertrain options for their future products.
Renault-Nissan SUVs India Launch Timeline
While both carmakers are yet to reveal the launch timeline of their future offerings, we expect Renault to launch the next-gen Duster in 2025, followed by the launch of its Nissan counterpart. Before the launch of the new Nissan SUV, we can expect the carmaker to launch a compact MPV based on the Renault Triber.
