Japanese auto major Nissan has recently demonstrated a prototype of the Infiniti Q50 fitted with the most advanced version of the company’s self-driving system named as the ProPilot.

Nissan and Infiniti’s new nameplate for self-driving technologies is the ProPilot. The ProPilot systems have been endowed on the new generation Nissan Leaf as well. However, till now the ProPilot suite comprises of electronic driver assist system including automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, alert systems, parking assist, etc. However, the Japanese company is bracing up to offer much advanced features and self driving capabilities soon enough.

The ProPilot system that Nissan demonstrated on the Q50 prototype belongs to an advanced level of autonomous driving technology. Nissan claims that its fully autonomous car technology will be able to offer one’s door to destination driving capability without any human intervention. The passenger has to simply key in the destination in the navigation system of the car and the car will take the passenger to his/her desired destination.

By door to destination travelling capability, Nissan does not mean limited highway driving capability, but almost all sorts of driving situations. As per the Japanese auto major, this advanced autonomous system has the capability to tackle complex driving situations which are faced by the human drivers in daily life. These include intersections, merging, lane changing, and even paying at toll booths. This really sounds amazingly impressive.

Even more impressive is the fact that Nissan has promised to get this system ready to be offered to the public by 2020. Thus, it is not a far into the future autonomous driving technology. However, the company hasn’t revealed whether this superb fully autonomous system will be available on showroom models or will be reserved for the company’s test fleets.

As is very apparent, this highly advanced ProPilot system largely depends on artificial intelligence and also makes use of a plethora of data input. This includes as many as 12 cameras, 6 laser scanners, 12 sonars, 9 millimeter-wave radars and a high-definition map. The artificial intelligence system of the car will be responsible of analyzing all the various incoming data in real time, and accordingly controls the vehicle to a level of comfort which is comparable to what a human driver offers, Nissan claims.

Nevertheless, this autonomous system from Nissan comes with Level 4 self-driving capabilities, and not the most advanced Level 5. This is owing to the fact that the system can operate safely without any human interventions only in particular conditions, essentially where HD maps are obtainable and the weather conditions are not too rough. Beyond these definite driving conditions, a human driver will be necessary. Thus, although an autonomous tech, someone needs to be behind the vehicle’s wheel all the time monitoring the situations.

Like many other auto majors, Nissan is also aiming for level 5 autonomous driving capabilities which will really define fully autonomous driving on all situations without the need of a human driver. This will also possible in the future, but the driving enthusiasts would certainly hate it.
